Chelation Therapy for Autism

Welcome! Thank you for visiting the Chelation Therapy for Autism message board. This is a place for support, discussion and friendly debate. This board is designed for those who hold the belief that heavy metal toxicity and/or environmental exposures (ie: mercury/aluminum from vaccination) are the probable cause for regressive autism. This is the main topic of discussion but subject matter is not limited to chelation alone. This message board does not constitute medical advice. Consult your physician for medical advice.

Coalition of Americans against Mercury...War has been declared....

by Stacie

Coalition of Americans against Mercury

URGENT COMMUNICATION -

Please forward this to all on your e-mail and fax broadcast lists..

War across the nation has been declared. Environmentalists, health professionals, scientists and attorneys have united. At a News Conference scheduled for April 24, in Washington D.C. science will be presented and legal initiatives across America will be announced, that promise to dwarf the tobacco industry lawsuits.

Doctors, dentists, lawyers and citizens rights groups are being asked to join in support of the Coalition of Americans against Mercury today!

It's your health, your environment and your children's futures at stake.

We need a strong voice for April 24th New Conference in Washington D.C.

Experts from across America will be in attendance and represented to address all questions. Full media kits with legal documents and supporting science and reports will be available for all attending media.

One trillion dollars is one estimate to have mercury fillings replaced with safer materials, in every American who was deliberately deceived and not made aware of the potential dangers of mercury dental fillings. Add to this the damage to health by mercury fillings, vaccines containing mercury, to damages for declining real estate values due to mercury spills and to the environment by industry and our dental professions and you begin to see the scope of the damages to be recovered.

Americans have always come to the aid of others in a time of need. Whether it was to defend, or to provide to those less fortunate in times of disaster.

Now, America faces a new enemy; a disaster that has been in the making for many, many years, right under your nose. This foe you cannot see, taste or smell. It carries no gun but it is deadly. It has no organized strategy but it attacks. It has invaded your food, your personal care products, your medicines, and your environment. It has poisoned your fish, contaminated your schools, contaminated your air and harmed your children. While you are slow to anger America – you are quick to act. The time to act is now, to defeat this insidious enemy. Your enemy America, is mercury. That metal that you played with in chemistry class, that metal that your dentist put in your teeth, that metal you watched rise in the thermometer when you checked your temperature. That metal is poison.

I’m sure you never imagined all those years as you recited the Pledge of Allegiance to your Flag, when you promised to protect and defend against all enemies, both foreign and domestic, that it would include an enemy you could hold in your hand. But here we are in the 21st century, being undermined and poisoned by a naturally occurring metal from Mother Earth. However, "Mother" is not the culprit – it is once again our fellow man. It is man who has imbalanced nature by mining, manufacturing and looking for easy, cheap ways to meet their goals. Mercury provided an end to a means, a money making venture – but it is we, the American people, our children and future generations who are paying the price.

Who will come to our aid? The rest of the world is also under attack by this enemy. Many countries recognized the war long before we did and began counter measures to defeat this common enemy. Switzerland, Sweden, Germany and Canada all have instituted restraints against the use of mercury.

Our own EPA has issued reports to Congress warning of the dangers to human health from mercury. But our government leaders turned a deaf ear and the invasion continued. The FDA flexed their power over the industries under their jurisdiction to have mercury removed from over the counter products – but it is not enough. We the people - "Americans against Mercury" in order to "preserve" this union we have created, must now come to our own aid to defeat this killer.

Scientists from around the world have studied mercury in all its’ forms. They have documented its effects on human and animal health. The reports are there – but who is reading them? Usually the people, who have already been poisoned, robbed of their health, their livelihood and years of their life. They are angry – and worse – they are too sick to mount a defense. They spend all their time and resources trying to get well. They try desperately to tell their story – but people won’t listen because it isn’t affecting them. – Or is it? Are you next? Will it affect you now – next year? Or maybe the affects won’t be apparent until you’re in your golden years when it affects your mental faculties, robbing you of your "golden" years.

We, "Americans against Mercury" do not believe the industries that make money from mercury over the scientists of the world.

Sign up today….

To join, please fax or e-mail your letter to us today, telling us that you are an American against Mercury. Please include name, address, e-mail and contact numbers.

If you are a practicing lawyer, physician or other professional who provides services that support the ban of mercury use, or that help those affected by mercury, please include the information above in addition to brief details and we will contact you directly.

Citizens Rights Groups, health, environmental and other organizations signing on to this initiative, please include your name with confirmation that you are in fact a signing officer, mandate of your organization, and the number of members you represent.

Any group wishing representation or to participate at the News Conference, please respond with details.

Letters and all other information should be sent immediately by e-mail to: communications@talkinternational.com or by fax to the Coalition of Americans against Mercury at (705) 789-9066.

son's hair test shows high mercury. Chelation scares me. Help

by

Hello everyone, I am new to this list. I recognized some names from another board. Happy to join here! My son Björn is 6.4 and we live in Sweden. I had him on a GFCF diet for 9 months with no great improvement. I decided to test him at DDI for metal toxicity to see if chelation could be an issue for him. This is what we got back:
Total Toxic Representation: 99 th percentile
Mercury 0.84 <0.4
Lead 4.0 <1.0
Aluminium 8.8 <8.0
Antimony 0.099 <0.066
Arsenic 0.12 <0.08
Nickel 0.42 <0.4
Tin 0.38 <0.3

How much poisened is he? Anyone had mecury on that level? Is Björn a good candidate for chelation? Whe shall we start? is it dangerous?
Thjank you so much for your answers.

by Stacie

"The Counting Rules"
Written by Andy Cutler

INTRODUCTION: WHY HAVE "COUNTING RULES"

Mercury is taken up by the body tissues and held for longer or shorter times. The blood holds on to it for a few months, the brain forever, and the rest of the tissues are in between.

Thus in chronic poisoning, or long after an exposure (such as from vaccines) some tissues have very little mercury in them. Other tissues may still have plenty and be well poisoned.

Unfortunately, most medical tests sample tissues that don't hold on to mercury very long. Because of this, measuring mercury in blood, urine, hair or feces is often not helpful in determining whether a person is poisoned.

The way to tell if a person is poisoned when mercury doesn't show up in the readily accessible things people will let the doc have some of is to test those accessible tissues for the biochemical abberations mercury causes. Since mercury impairs mineral transport, examining hair for the level of many essential elements lets us determine if mercury has left its signature in the hair's biochemistry even if the mercury itself doesn't show up.

ABOUT TEST RESULTS, IN GENERAL

Medical laboratory tests are standardized by testing a bunch of normal, healthy people and determining "normal ranges" where 1 person in 40, on average, is above them and 1 in 40 below, for a total of 2 in 40 or 1 in 20 who do not fall "within normal limits."

Of course, with this statistical definition, this means that if you do eight gazillion tests in some mondo test panel, some of them are expected to randomly be out of range. The Doctor's Data hair element analysis is in effect one of those mondo test panels, like a "chem 25" blood test panel. While it is extremely difficult to go look at the myriad interrelationships of all the things on these panels (and in practice nobody does it), it is possible to use statistical methods to turn the whole panel into "one test" that is either "within normal limits" or "abnormal." I have done this and generated the following rules to interpret the DDI "essential and other" elements portion of their test which includes 23 elements. For tests including a number of elements different than 23, the rules have to be rederived.

HOW TO READ A HAIR TEST FROM DDI

If any of the following rules are met, the test is "abnormal" for mineral transport and suggests heavy metal toxicity. These rules are ONLY for the Doctor's Data test - tests by other companies need different rules. I highly recommend using the DDI test.

Count the number of results that are above "average," that is above the 50th percentile line in the middle of the page and the bar extends to the right instead of to the left.
Count the number of results that are all the way to either edge of the page, "very elevated" or "very low."
Count the number of results that are in the middle band of the page, with a short bar, and are neither "elevated" nor "low."
The result is abnormal and suggests heavy metal intoxication if any of the following criteria are met:
The number of essential elements "very elevated" and "very low" is 4 or more.
The number of essential elements entirely inside the middle band is 14 or less.
The number of essential elements above average is EITHER 5 or less OR it is 18 or more.
If any ONE of these criteria is met, the test result is abnormal.
If any one (or more) of these criteria are met, there is a 1 in 44 chance that it happened randomly and a 43 in 44 chance that something is wrong. Of course, the chances that it is random diminish rapidly as the deviation departs from the minimum listed number, just as the chance that a result on a blood test, say for the liver enzyme ALT means something if it is 300 points above normal instead of 3 points above normal. (since you can't count, say, 5 and a half tests out of 23 doing it this way I couldn't make it exactly 1 in 40 so I made it as close as I could).

ADDITIONAL PATTERNS WHICH ARE CHARACTERISTIC OF MERCURY TOXICITY

There are some characteristic nonstatistical findings, too, in mercury toxic people that I thought I would mention. These are probably caused by more heavy metals than just mercury, but are NOT caused by COPPER toxicity - copper toxic people with nothing else going on have very normal looking hair analyses except for very elevated copper. Not everyone has these but they are reasonably common:

Typically, the calcium is vastly elevated. Usually the lithium is very low, too.
Sometimes there is a really characteristic pattern of Ca and Mg very high with Na and K very low. This isn't present in many cases but is common enough to mention since it is strongly diagnostic.
The most important finding is a bit difficult to describe, but if you look at the hair analyses of some "normal" people it is quite obvious by eye - mercury toxic people have their essential elements much more scattered than well people. Lots of highs and lows.

HOW TO READ A HAIR TEST FROM GREAT SMOKIES

The GSDL hair element analysis is interpreted by counting the number of "abnormal" highs and lows (way at the edges of the little bell curves on the test result sheet) for the nutrient elements + the additional elements. This gives 21 elements considered.

The number of results above "average" is also counted by drawing a line down the middle of the column with a ruler since there is no appropriate marking on the page. Do this carefully.

If the number of abnormal highs plus abnormal lows is 3 or more the test result is overall abnormal for mineral transport (and positive for mercury or other poisoning).
If the number of elements that are above average (above the line you drew down the middle) is not between 6 and 15 (that is, if it is either less than 6 or greater than 15) then the test result is overall abnormal for mineral transport (and positive for mercury or other poisoning).
This information is provided so you can interpret the GSDL hair test if you happened to get one. If you are considering getting a test the Doctor's Data test is presented in such a way that it is more useful, and it is also less expensive. Thus the DDI test is a better choice if you are offered one. But if you already had the test, or don't have a choice this is how to interpret the GSDL hair elements test.

APPENDIX

For those who like numbers and equations, the way I did this is pretty simple.

The probability of a given number of event "A" and event "B" where "B" is "not A" out of n tries is:

Pa ^ Na * Pb ^ Nb * 23CNb
(23CNa = 23CNb since Na + Nb = 23)

where Na is the number of events A and Nb is the number of events B, and Pa and Pb are the probabilities of events A and B. Pa + Pb = 1.

So I could calculate this for all Na and sum the probabilities up from, say, zero to some number. What I did was calculate probabilities and add them up so the total probability of satisfying the counting rules given above is 0.023 (2.3%) and all the the 3 different things I check have similar probabilities of occurrence.

The probability, Pa, of something being "very elevated" or "very low" is defined by the "normal limits" of a medical test as 0.05.

The probability, Pa, of something being within one standard deviation of average (in the middle band on the DDI test report) is defined by statistics as 2/3.

The probability, Pa, of something being greater than average, is of course 0.5 or 50%.

Fatima: do you know about the autism-mercury group?

by Vicky

It is a great group to join and you can get a lot of help. Your sons results looks very toxic. You might want to look into chelation. Do you have Andy Cutler's book on chealtion. It is very helpful to understand the effects of mercury in your body. Also, you will read a lot of stories of children making wonderful improvements. You are not alone. This and other groups will help to answer your questions. Vicky

Thank you for your information Vicky. What is the title of the book? Is it possible to order it via amazon.com?
I will definitely look into chelation for Björn. I had his hair tested at DDi via The Great Plains Laboratory (because when one lives outside the US, one can order tests without the signature of a doctor). I had a phone consultation with GPL after I received the resuts. They said that it is absolutely worth pursuing.I plan to learn as much as possible about chelation therapy and may be start in summer. I have been told that doctor Bradstreet works with a lot of families overseas. I will check the situation within this field in Sweden as well.Iam going to join the autism-mercury group. Fatima

Hello, I saw your post on the Autism/Mercury Board. Welcome aboard. It is a very informative board.

Andy will ask you to post the "essential elements" part of the test, he will be able to tell you more about your son's toxicity because mercury causes the "essential elements" to show a scattered pattern on the graph with highs and lows.

For all the SPECIAL MOMS I've met on this board

by Shirley

> > > >>>
> > > >>> >
Before I was a Mom...
I made and ate hot meals.
I had unstained clothing.
I had quiet conversations on the phone.

Before I was a Mom...
I slept as late as I wanted And never worried about how late I got into bed.
I brushed my hair and my teeth everyday.

Before I was a Mom...
I cleaned my house each day.
I never tripped over toys or forgot words to lullabies.

Before I was a Mom...
I didn't worry whether or not my plants were poisonous. I never
thought about immunizations.

Before I was a Mom...
I had never been puked on
Pooped on
Spit on
Chewed on
Peed on
Or pinched by tiny fingers

Before I was a Mom...
I had complete control of my mind
My thoughts
My body I slept all through the night.

Before I was a Mom...
I never held down a screaming child So that doctors could do tests Or give shots.
I never looked into teary eyes and cried.
I never got gloriously happy over a simple grin.
I never sat up late hours at night watching a baby sleep.

Before I was a Mom...
I never held a sleeping baby just because I didn't want to put it
down.
I never felt my heart break into a million pieces When I couldn't
stop the hurt.
I never knew that something so small Could affect my life so much.
I never knew that I could love someone so much.
I never knew I would love being a Mom.
Before I was a Mom...
I didn't know the feeling of having my heart outside my body.
I didn't know how special it could feel to feed a hungry baby.
I didn't know that bond between a Mother and her child.
I didn't know that something so small Could make me feel so
important.

Before I was a Mom...
I had never gotten up in the middle of the night Every 10 minutes
to make sure all was okay.
I had never known the warmth
The joy
The love
The heartache
The wonderment
Or the satisfaction of being a Mom.
I didn't know I was capable of feeling so much before I was a Mom.

Send this to a someone whom you think is a special MOM!

Scared about Chelation

by

Hi, everyone:
I have never posted any messages on this site. My name is Laura. I have a 3 1/2 yr. old son. His name is Noah. We are currently seeing Dr. Holmes. I have been reading up on chelation. I have a question for everyone. What happens to the mercury when you are chelating? Is it possible for the mercury to bind to other parts of the brain during this process? That is my fear. I do not want to cause further damage while I am trying to do something good.
Thank you,
Laura

Hi Laura....this is a great board

by Shirley

It posts fast and their are some very experienced people here that chelate. I hope they respond too.

The ALA is given in tiny doses such as 12.5 mg. because of your fear. I'm not sure if it will actually bind in the brain somewhere else, or just cause damage on its way out. But I think the more you read on it, the better you will feel about chelation. Everyone recommends small doses. Less is more. The more you read other parents experiences, the better you will feel. I haven't read any horror stories. I have read where children react regressively when the ALA is added because the mercury is getting stirred up. But after, these same people report a rainbow of positives.

I was nervous about chelation too. But I look forward to it every weekend now. Good luck!! And please keep us posted. I love to read other experiences.

Hello Laura and Noah...

by Stacie

Welcome to this board.

I too was scared of chelation. I began Daniel (age 7) on both DMSA and ALA both with very low doses. 12.5mg of each. My son's speach improves with each round. We get out low amounts of metals but I don't feel we are harming his liver or putting it under much stress as we might with the higher doses.

The first day was the toughest with regression because of stirring up the merc. He had a very short attention span and was very, very busy. But that has leveled off. He does have some regression between rounds which seemed to be helped with Epsom salt baths and MSM. (for the sulpher).

As for moving the mercury to the brain. My therory on that is "if it can be moved once, it can be moved again and eventually pulled out". There is a risk with anything you may try. But, I feel the positive aspect of eleviating my son of his toxic burden overrides any fear I may have of moving the mercury into his brain. That is also one of the reasons I am using such low amounts of the combination.

Hope this is helpful and best wishes for you and your son.

A risk that is minimized by following the every 3-4 hour
administration protocol, and by avoiding ALA for a few months if there
has been recent exposure.

> 2. Minerals may be extracted from body while extracting mercury.

Incorrect.

> 3. Harmful things (different heavy metals) may get into liver or
kidney.

The kidney is safe. ALA affects body levels of copper and zinc, so
using very large quantities for a real long time can overload the
liver with those.

> Is this right or something else?

ALA also raises gluathione and cysteine levels, which can be very
unpleasant for people already high in them.

We tried Cranial Scacrel Therapy this morning....

by Stacie

and Daniel loved it!

He has been having trouble with his eyes tracking together (has bells palsy - birth injury), balancing, he tends to walk to the right or leaning on walls. He has been doing an awful lot of spinning around - acting dizzy, jumping. (and his doc wanted to put him on meds - I told him that I wanted to try this first and I got his blessing!)

OMG. The difference in one two hour "treatment" is amazing. He cooperated! Told her when it was working. And she felt the fluid move as he told her. It was absolutely incredible.

His pupils have become smaller! (I haven't figured out this one yet) His eyes are tracking together. He can walk a straight line again.

...and she showed me how to work with him. While I was working with him there - he held eye contact longer than he has iin months! and said "I love you mommy. This feels so good!" While Janet was holding his neck and he was lying down - he held her gaze and said "You are a nice lady". He has NEVER told anyone anything like that! I left the room and cried.

...What a morning. It was absolutely incredible.

How did I find her? um. (how do I put this? lol)... I have a freind who is a bigger hippie than I am and she took her children to Janet. So, she came highly reccommended.

Janet has been practicing for 23 years. She began when she adopted a little boy (age 3 at the time) with autism. I met him yesterday. He is wonderful young man in college.

These are the ones I have so far...
Ester C, Melatonin, Flax Seed Oil, B-12 and another b complex and a non-toxic iron supplement from Sundown vit's. I almost bought Selenium but it has yeast. Is this yeast ok?

I have no idea how I am going to mix all of these supplements. Some of them are in tablet form.
Maybe I would be better off with a multiple vit of some sort.

Thanks for any advice,

This is what I use...

by Shirley

Kirkman's--
Mult. Mineral Complex Pro-Support
Mult. Vitamin Pro-Support (for days off chelation)
Chelation Aid Pro-Support
Milk Thistle
Coromega (Cod Liver Oil)
TMG
acidophilos

On the days on chelation I substitute the Vitamin Pro-support for AllergyResearchGroup Multi-Vi-Min without copper and iron from www.nutricology.com (because I don't want the DMSA binding to the iron instead of the mercury--my own little quirk)

I was so anxious to start the first round, I didn't preload vitamins properly. I gave him too much at once and it made him very sick. So I had to wait for him to get better before I could start again. I started with the 3 days on 11 days off protocol. So, I was so anxious to start, I just did. The first weekend I chelated with DMSA only. He was getting the vitamins that his body was used to getting and maybe a few more from over the counter that the DAN protocol recommended. Then I went through and bought alot of the supplements separate. This was a problem because there were so many pills and it was hard to get them all in him. So I went through Kirkman's because they have the supplements designed in the right doses and I don't have to do as many pills, or I will not be successful. Now he is getting all of his supplements and I feel better. So I switched to the 3 days on and four days off, so I could chelate every weekend. It is hard, but the every other weekend chelation didn't seem necessary. My son seems healthier than ever. His energy seems more consistent than it ever did before. (before he seemed lethargic, then hyperactive, then lethargic, etc.) If he starts to seem taxed in any way, I will go back to the 3 days/11days.

Iron supplementation

by Shirley

Food absorbs aluminum from aluminum pots and pans. I found this website that sells cast iron cookware. It is supposed to be better for you. The food that you cook will be enhanced with iron instead of aluminum and you won't have to supplement separate for anyone in the family. (my son won't take any supplements with iron taste)

I've been looking for an alternative for awhile, since iron supplements are recommended for chelation. (DMSA binds to iron, as well)

Here's the website....

I called the dentist about my amalgam fillings. She told me...

by DLO

they could remove them if they weren't too big. They still use the amalgam fillings. I didn't know that. We are in California. I have a mouth full of these fillings and want them removed. If I can't get this procedure done what would happen if I chelate myself anyway?
Fortunately my kids haven't had any cavities so far and I am going to insist on a different type of filling when and if they do get a cavity.

Check back later,:o)

Hi DLO :*)

by Shirley

If you don't get them removed and start chelating, I believe that the chelation can draw the mercury from your fillings (where they are away from you cells) into your body. If it gets drawn into your body, you could get really sick or more sick. At least that is what I've read. The more I learn about chelation, though I wonder if this would happen or someone is surmising that this could? I don't know?

In Limbo just had hers removed on Thursday. She posts regularly on this board. I am hoping she will give a full report when she can. I hope it wasn't too painfull. Her children are small and she is chelating her youngest, so she keeps very busy. But she will also be able to tell you the specifics.

Here is a list of mercury-free dentists that might be able to help you if your doctor cannot.

You don't want to chelate until ALL your fillings are removed.

by Vicky V.

If you don't then the chelator will pull the metals out and put it into your body and you don't metals in, you want metals out. Vicky

Because the chelating agents suck mercury out of the amalgams and into you at least as fast as they get it to come out of you.

Why does chelation have to be every 3 hours instead of just twice a day every day?..Hi Shirley!:o)

by

What is the difference and why does it have to be 3 to 4 days on and off 3 to 4 days. It is confusing and I don't believe I will be successful in rousing both my kids especially my little girl. I am very new at this and am using ALA beginning this weekend if possible.

Thanks!:o)

Hi DLO

by Shirley

Hopefully some others more experienced in chelating will come and answer this too.

You don't want too much mercury coming out at one time, because it destroys cells. The cells that it can destroy can likely regenerate, but then, you can't count on it without help. Too much mercury coming out at once will shock the system. Some will make it out of the system, and other mercury might bind to other cells and attach there. Then you have done damage and the mercury still has not made it out. Did you watch that video clip? It will help clarify this. So small doses given frequently is how Dr. Andy recommends for ALA chelating.

Now, about not being successful??? I was doing the DAN protocol. Using what Dr. Amy Holmes tells one of her patients (on this board). I may be switching to Dr. Cutler's protocol instead. (the one that I posted for you) I've tried the 8 hour one, and I think I could be more successful with the small frequent doses. This is because with the 8 hour, I have problems with the night dose. I don't do too bad, but not as good as I want. And the 3 hour (or 4) protocol, the doses are so small, I think I can do the night time doses without waking him up too much. Especially, the ALA isn't as noticable as the DMSA. I think you can do it. Just be ready to stop if you miss a dose and start again. My first weekend of chelation was a flop, but I learned so much and the next time, I did so much better. But I didn't do damage. And you can lose skills that you have worked so hard for if damage is done.

That clears up alot of my questions...also

by

I just got back from the store. I had to go to three different places and finally found lipoic acid at Walmart.:o)
In addition to that I bought milk thistle, b12, vit.c,
and melatonin 1/2 mg.(I know I am leaving out something)
I have started with the melatonin this evening as well as the b12.
I am very interested in the 8 hour protocol you were trying.
Do you know if the 3 hour protocol is for every cycle from now on? Does this ever change to the 8 hour dose eventually?

Thanks so much for all your help. I haven't gotten the download yet. I will try tomorrow. I don't have much patience with this old 'puter.haha

The ALA chelation doesn't

by Shirley

The DMSA with ALA protocol that Dr. Holmes and the DAN protocol use is every 8 hours.

How much ALA per dose do you plan to use? And how much does your son weigh? It is better to use less ALA, than more. Then adjust to what you need.

It sounds like you are off to a good start! Good luck!

My son weighs 60 lbs and is 7. He is tall for his age..*grin...

by DLO

Anyway I read that the dose for dmsa and ala are the same. That is 1/2 mg of ala so it would by 30 mg per dose at every 3 hours. If my math is right I get 8 doses around the clock at 30mg and the total for all those doses is 240 mg in all.
The lipoic acid I found is 50 mg tablets so I am not sure how to make the dose 30 mg. This was the only strength I could find.

Thanks again Shirley for your help. Thank God for this board. :o))

dosages of ALA and DMSA

by Vicky vanyo

I've read, time and time again, that DMSA dosage should not exceed 1mg per pound and ALA should be 1/8 th of the childs weight. If the dosage is lower then that is O.K. but it is higher then you will most likely experience problems, unnecessarily. For ex: if the child weighs 80lbs then the ALA should be 8mg (every three hour-so says Andy) or less. The DMSA can be upto 80mg per 3 to 4 hr dosage. Andy also recommends that if you are doing both ALA and DMSA the dosages should be given every three hour. If you are just using DMSA then doing every four hours at night is O.K. but during the day you should do every three hour. Hope this helps. Vicky

Hi Vicky, This is what I found...

by DLO

For DMSA or LA, start with 1/8 to ½ mg. per pound of child. Is this incorrect?
It is from an article that I found that goes into detail about chelation. I posted the full article a couple of days ago at the gfcf board.

Hi DLO

by Stacie

I more or less use Andy Cutlers protocol...

I began Daniel's chelation with both DMSA and ALA. but in very low doses. He gets 12.5 mg of each (Kirkmans Lowdose) every four hours. He weighs 54 lbs and is now 7 years old.

We are seeing metals exiting via urine tests. They are not in high amounts because I feel that it would put way too much strain on his body. I am very happy taking this very slow.

Daniel chelates beginning friday evening thru monday morning. When I run urine tests it is on Sunday. No test has come back with elevated amounts but many, many metals are coming out and he IS improving with each round.

For additional information with hyperbaric oxygen therapy

by Shirley

Thank you in Limbo for posting that wonderful site. For anyone else interested, if you go there at..

http://sprinks-clicks.about.com/?bid=1362664&lnk=http://www.hyperbaric%2Dtherapy.com/pushad/index.html

they have a "care practitioner" area. You can type in your state and find the closest one to you and email for more information, or ask for it to be sent to your home. Here is a copy of my email to I sent out. I sent about 6 to start with to the least expensive and closest to me. I shall keep you posted if anything interesting comes. Feel free to copy and paste it for your own use.

Hello,

My son has autism from mercury poisoning from the thermisol in the vaccines.

(FYI: At Autism Research Institute there is a paper with mercury poison symptoms paired next to autistic characteristics. They are identical-at...http://www.autism.com/ari/mercurylong.html )

I am orally chelating him with DMSA and ALA right now. I recently saw clip on the damage that is done to the brain cells by mercury.

(at .... http://movies.commons.ucalgary.ca/mercury)

Now I'm wondering if I chelate my son, whether the brain will heal or if it will need help. So I am exploring the possibility of hyperbaric chambers.

I read some information about hyperbaric oxygenation for anoxic encephalopathy (equivalent to my son's autism) and a controlled clinical trial with autism subjects.

I have many questions.

1) how much is the cost per treatment?

2) how many treatments are recommended, or is there a recommended treatment schedule?

3) have you had any experience treating children with autism?

4) my son is six with autism, I question whether or not he will be too scared to get him in the chamber. Is there any special techniques you have?

5) are there any risks involved? What are they?

6) has your place ever had any reports of negative effects?

And any other information that you could give me, I'd be most grateful! Thank you and have a great day!

Responses back....

by Shirley

I received several emails back...here they are...

Mr. Shirl,
My name is Jana, I am a CHT working for Dr Paul Harch in Marrero, La (suburb of New Orleans). We are treating and have treated several autistic children, all with great success. I would like to answer your questions, but it would probably be easier to send you our information packet that we send to everyone inquiring about the off label use of HBOT. It goes into great detail explaining all aspects of our HBOT protocol. I can also provide you with a mother to contact in Baton Rouge LA., whose autistic child has just completed
her first 40 HBOT treatments. Her name is Tara Parish, her email address is Parishdarren@AOL.com. She is the LA representative for Unlocking Autism. I'm sure that she would be more than glad to share with you her own feelings about HBOT and what it did for her child (Ciera). I have been doing hyperbarics for the past 15 years, and since we began treating children (CP, Near drowning, TBI, Autistic and other various syndromes) I have seen the most changes in the child with autism. My only explanation to this observation is probably the fact that these children are more unable to handle social interacting due to all the stimuli they are
exposed to. Once they start HBOT, I have observed that they are more interactive with people, calmer and easier to control. As you know autistic children are individuals and even though they do have a common bond they are all different. Some more severe than others. We have treated this wide range...each and everyone improved. Some who were not talking are now beginning to speak. Those who would not interact now are playing with others. The changes are obvious. If you would like I would be more than glad to send you a packet. You could either email me with your name, address and phone number or you could call me at our facility and I would be more than glad to talk to you. You can reach me at (504) 348-4357. Best of luck to you.
Jana Knight, CHT.

Hi, Shirley, hyperbarics has done more for Ciera than the chelation therapy, we to have been doing this for the past two years. We are still watching her change due to the hyperbarics. We have medicaid so it paid for the brain spects and dr appts. The hyperbarics itself were $150.00 per treatment and 40 treatments cost $6000.00 this we had to take out a loan for. I believe that it is worth every penny, and hopefully we can have a fundraiser if Ciera needs the last 40 treatments. Dr. Harch and Jana have been a blessing to work with and any enjoyment I have in my life right now from Ciera I owe to them. Please give this treatment much consideration I find that it is worth
a try.

Tara

I don't mind if you post our names on the boards. Chelation therapy did not show much result but with hyperbarics we have seen an improvement in behavior
and her speech has increased 3 words, which is alot to us. She has better motor skills now to feed herself without making a mess. I am hoping still for more improvements.

Tara

Dear Eric,
I agree with the mercury problem. We use IV DMPS in mercury toxic patients with maldies such as MS to help the neuroilogical symptoms. As far as your questions.
1. Averages about $98 per treatment
2. In CP, 40-60
3. 1 child who improved. His mother, Beth Bowers, is head of the local autism society
4. We hav a TV right outside with VCR capability; Many of the children have a favorite tape that they want played. Parents or siblings can go into the tank with them. The tank is clear plexiglass.
5. No side effects have been observed. A ruptured ear drum can occur if kids have trouble with ears so some parents have tubes put in if that is a problem.
6. No Write MUMS for their compendium of papers on HBO and neurological disorders in children, If you are unaware of MUMS (Mothers United for Moral Support)
call Amy, myHBO tech 816-453-5940 and she will give you their address.

Dr Rudolph

Thank you for your interest in my center please call me at 215 643 1875 so we can speak at length regarding your son.

Age of your children that are being chelated.

by LJ

What is the age of your child that is undergoing chelation? Also, what dosage of DMSA are you using? I am beginning tomorrow, probably, with my son who is 8 years old and weighs 65lbs. He will be taking 300mg every 8 hours. It seems like everyone else is taking less.

Mine is six years old

by Shirley

and he is taking 100 mg every 4 hours. The bedtime dose, I double up, because I can't get him to take it at night very well. The 3:30 am dose is very difficult and I'm not sure if I'm getting it all in him. So, I double up the bedtime one so I only have to wake him up once. And the last dose before school, I double up and it is done. This way the school does not have to mess with it. At first when I began chelating, I wasn't very successful with getting the doses in him. But I am getting more creative and working out the kinks. Good luck to you!

Friday
3:30pm 100mg
7:30pm 200mg

Saturday
3:30am 100mg
7:30am 100mg

Daniel

by Stacie

is 7. Well, just turned 7 in March. He weighs 52 lbs and is taking very low doses compared to everyone else. I have been giving him 12.5mg dmsa and 12.5 ala every 4 hours. I started him on this instead of the plain dmsa. Will up that to 25 and 25 beginning this weekend.

We are getting lots of metals out each round I test. They are in low amounts but some is better than keeping it all in there. I am noticing improvement with each round. After this past round he just started added adverbs into his speach! He has never done that before and yesterday evening used several. (yeah!)

I wanted to take it slow and not put a large burden on his kidneys or liver.

I've been e-mailing Andy Cutler and he suggested that I just double what Daniel is doing now. Instead of 12.5mg of dmsa and 12.5mg of ala, double the dose every 3-4 and see how that goes....

I'll give it a whirl for a while. Regression city - here we come!

This is going to be an interesting Saturday...

Stacie--lol

by Shirley

maybe it won't be so bad. Your DMSA dose is very low. How old is Daniel? (curious)

I am very disappointed. When Troy got home from school, I had his snack ready to go, laced with his DMSA. And his appetite isn't there. This usually means he is sick. (Shirley--stomp, stomp, stomping around) Then he started eating some (he usually wolfs food after school) and he threw it up after 20 min. Makes me want to pull my hair out. We didn't chelate last weekend because he wasn't feeling well. Normally, he is never sick. So, I might have to abort mission and try again tomorrow or next weekend. We shall see.

It is kind of pathetic, but I look forward to my chelation weekends. (I live for them--lol) So this is very disappointing.

Let me know how it goes.

Daniel...

by Stacie

is 7. Yes, I know my dmsa dose is very low. Andy says that when you use both ala and dmsa together you don't need as much dmsa. Anyway, I started with both.

I'm going to give Daniel his dose and then we are going flower shopping. This should be interesting. I'll have Daniel and Michelle (4) with me... then we will coome home and plant some flowers. I have this thing for pansys and iris! lol.... Yard work - fun fun. while I'm doing that type stuff (with kids help) they always get to pick out some of their own flowers and have to repot them! When we are done with flowers - I've got strawberries and my herbs to plant!

Then I think it's a trip to burger king! Gonna keep him busy so the regression won't be too noticable and I plan on waring them out!!!! When we come back - I'm sending him to his basketball hoop - which he got last weekend for his birthday. He is so proud of that.

Maybe later in the afternoon - I'll take them up to the school with their bicycles and let them ride around for a while!

Sound good! I usually look forward to chelation weekends too - but since he hasn't done it a month.... oh boy!

That is so nice that you can do things like that together. When I plan to keep Troy busy like that, it always backfires on me. I get more worn out than him. lol But it still I think is better than sitting around the house. And maybe since you are active, the stimulation will off set the regression, if there is any. (ie stimulation=brain cells generating while regression=brain cells degenerating, or confused) I think you have it worked out very nicely. Hope you have/had fun!

Shirley!

by Stacie

What a day! Daniel was fabulous!

here I was expecting laughing fits and temper tantrums because we haven't used the dmsa/ala mixture in a month and the only thing he did was talk a little louder. I was expecting him to be bounching off the walls! He was great.

He was happy, loving, helpful, polite. You couldn't ask for a better behaved little boy! He gave so many frequent hugs and kisses.

I told him at one point today that he needed to drink a lot so he would pee more because that's how the metals get out. And he ran to the sink chugged down and glass of water and went to the bathroom. Came out and said "I just got out more metals"... It was so precious!!!! My little character!

Anyway, did you get to chelate today? How did it go?

How Cute, Stacie!

by Shirley

That is adorable! What a smart little boy!

Well, I think Troy is playing the school. He came home and dramatically lay down on the couch. (dramatic for him) And normally he begins to "hunt and gather" when he comes home, unless I have his snack ready to go. Yesterday, I did have it ready, though. He just lay there. After I got some DMSA in him, he threw it up. He made himself, though. He is not big on throwing up. But the school babies him and doesn't make him work when he does. (I'm guessing) They sent a note home Thursday saying that they didn't brush him all day, because he just wanted to be held all day. And that they hope he feels better after he gets some sleep. ??? What is that? He got plenty of sleep the night before. They make deductions, reassure each other that they are absolutely correct, then make these statements to me, practically daring me to challenge their psychic abilities. Anyway--done venting about them.

After he threw up, I cleaned it and him up. And went back to washing the dishes to see what he would do. After about 5 min. or less, he was running around like he usually does. Then he ate his snack. So, I am chelating this weekend after all.

This morning he made a mess and was really dirty. I asked him if he wanted a bath. (he never does--just recently started taking them again--for 2 years I had to sponge bathe him) He grabbed my hand and pulled me to the bathroom. I filled it up and he got in and said, "simn simn simn simn simn", looking at me with his big brown eyes. I said, "oh sing?" (I was surprised--I do sing to him, but sometimes he doesn't seem interested) I started singing songs to him. He looked at me funny. I said sing? He repeated, "simn simn simn simn" I laughed and said, "Swim? Oh swim? Are you swimming?" he said, Ya. So I repeated that he was swimming for a while and he started ducking his head in the water. It was cute. And not typical. He has had more spontaneous language than he has for a while. And it the right context. He was VERY active though. Trying (and succeeding sometimes) to grab and dump everything out today. It has been hard keeping up with him today. I'm looking forward to see what tomorrow brings.

I think Troy is playing the school too! Smart little guy!

Troy likes swimming? Daniel won't go into our big pool. But he likes the small one I have on the deck for him. He puts the slide in it and has a great time. I don't really know why he doesn't like the big pool, but I'm not willing to push it. When he is ready he will come on in! He did dangle his feet in last year. Will see how this summer goes.

I'm going to the beach next weekend! Me and the three kids a girlfreind of mine and her two. Her daughter and my daughter have been "best freinds" since kindergarten (now 6th grade). And her youngest and Daniel play well together. No husbands! Just us and the kids!!!! Leaving thursday returning Sunday! Yeah - cant wait! Got a great house with a jacuzzi, and only 500 feet from the beach. Has bicycles - and close to the shops!!!! I can't wait!

That sounds like so much fun!

by Shirley

You really deserve it! And your daughter and Daniel will have so much fun too! Having a special friend is really great for girls. My daughter is like that. She always has to have at least one special gal pal.

Beach time!!!

by Stacie

It don't look like it is going to be too bad weather wise. Might have some showers on Friday. Oh well. A rainy on the beach is better than a sunny day at home. I can't wait.

I'm taking off wednesday too! Gotta go to the dentist and put some new tires on my van.

Daniel did so well chelating this weekend... he was in such good moods all weekend! How did the rest of your weekend go?

The weekend with chelation was great

by Shirley

much more attempts of meaningful language. Some echolalia. But since he's started with this school, he has had nearly no language. The speech path told me that he may never have any. (yet he had some) She only wants to work on PECs with Troy. I'm going to be taking him to another speech path that my insurance covers and see what she has to say. She has had alot of success with children on the spectrum. And she is a sister. (a nun)

He's been very happy all weekend. I love chelation. I'm thinking about switching to the 3 days on 4 days off schedule. What do you think? (or anyone else?)

Sending him to school is the hard part for me. He has been so reluctant getting on the bus. He looks at me like I'm betraying him everytime I put him on there. I hope he has a good day.

We use....

by Stacie

the three day on four day off schedule... But I start saturday morning thru Monday morning. Last dose was at 7:00 this morning.

I was just down at the school. Daniel is having a good day. Has been freindly with everyone. Seems to be having some vision sensitivity today. Oh well, I told them to allow him to wear his sun-glasses inside. This is nothing I didn't expect... got that stuff circlulating big time!

Reputable Docs that do chelation in Pennsylvania/New Jersey

by Judy M.

Any one doing chelation therapy in PA or NJ? I am interested hearing who you have found to be reputable.

Anyone chelating with Dr. Neubrander? I actually have an appointment in April for my son, but I have a really bad feeling about this particular doctor based on my telephone conversation with him. I'm curious to hear from anyone else who sees him.

My initial conversation with him on the phone sent up all kinds of red flags. We have been seeing Maureen McDonnell and a DAN doctor (M.D.) for over a year now, We have run batteries of tests already. At this point I am interested in Heavy Metals testing, so Maureen McDonnell referred me to Dr. Neubrander. He answered the phone himself, and told me he speaks to the parents of patients he "considers taking on." When I told him I was already following the DAN protocol, He told me that he "treats the whole child, and while it seems like I may be starting all over, I'm really not." His initial visit of $450 was steep, especially considering the fact that I am being referred by McDonnell, after we have already tried other interventions. I asked if he had other parents I might speak to whose children he has successfully treated, and gave the receptionist, (his daughter) my e-mail. I have heard from no one. The forms he send me to fill out look like a big fishing expedition (he wants every detail of my child's life). I don't need him to "find" something, I want tests that show something real and legitimate, and then I want to treat it. Over all I had a really bad impression. I'd love to hear your experiences with him, and how your child is doing.

Judy

I am so used to doctors not doing what they are supposed to do. I got used to going in and telling them what I needed and doing their homework for them.

The funny thing is, is that it sounds like this doctor is thorough and a really good doctor. I don't blame him for wanting to check everything himself, since he may have a "system" or he may actually be a responsible doctor. (so rare)

I wish I could go to him.

But I do understand how you feel. He should start where your other doctor left off. He should respect that you are tired and don't want to finance or spend the time re-doing things.

My DAN doctor wasn't very good. He wasn't up on any of the current things that the other DAN docs were doing. So we went to his old pediatrician who is absolutely fabulous with my daughter. But she is too mainstream for my son.

Good luck with your decision.
