Hello. Try as we may - it is difficult to keep students from smuggling snacks into class. Lately the leftover food has attracted fruit flies which I cannot get rid of. I’ve cleaned everywhere but I hate to use insecticides in a closed environment. Does anyone have a similar experience or suggestions?

While conventional sprays are questionable and sticky tape does not work that well there are other ways to dispatch the fruit fly pests. You can try some wine in a jar. The flies fall in it or sort of get drunk off the fumes and die.
I found an even more thorough method (http://fruitflytraps.com/hometrap.htm) that tells you a clever yet simple way to build your own traps. It worked for us.
