Well Dan almost scared me from heading over to climb Whitecap Peak after his report of the snow conditions earlier last week. However, a few cold nights firmed up the snow. It was 15 or 20 degrees Friday night which made for great snow conditions. I had the good fortune of running into Summitdawg in Sawmill Gulch where he was leading a group up (maybe he will post some pictures). The gullies leading up toward the south ridge of Whitecap were perfect for cramponing. Above 11000 feet the snow was looser but we only sunk in a foot or so. On the way down, the snow softened up for excellent glissading. Appreciate Summitdawg showing me a really fun route up the peak. For what its worth, the road up Sawmill Gulch was pretty much clear of snow up to 8000 feet or so- a few snow drifts to drive through that will probably melt off in the next week.
