It certainly does seem that way ...

Response to "science itself is under assault"

The Republicans are not doing their party any good by being hostile to science. They might reap some sort of short term gains but that will not last.

There was a bi-partisan effort a few years ago to create a government bureau for Complimentary Medicine. Orrin Hatch, the conservative Republican from Utah was involved in that, as was Tom Harkin, the very liberal senator from Iowa. Harkin was very visible in the background, grinning like the Cheshire Cat, when Howard Dean melted down with his HeeHaw in the 2004 Democratic Primary.

That article refers to the Terry Schiavo case and in my humble opinion Senate Majority leader Frist who is a medical doctor came off as a jerk. As I recall he contradicted the opinions of some capable doctors who had physically examined Ms. Schiavo and had the unfortunate opinion that she was brain dead. He, on the other hand, felt otherwise even though he had never seen the woman. So much for the science of medicine.

Republicans are not the only ones. Think of all those who put faith in homeopathy and faith healing. The numbers are staggeringly large and I expect Republicans are a minority in that particular arena.

Sometimes I wish those folks would just stick to their beliefs and in not too many years the fear and mistrust of science will be an extinct idea.
