"...crusading atheists. ..."
They aren't atheists in my book and since the definition of "atheist" isn't universal by any standard, it is open to debate. Atheists don't crusade. Period. If they do, they are just prosyletizing their particular brand of religion. How does it make sense to make it your duty in life to go around insisting (unbidden to innocent victims) that something which isn't known to exist, doesn't exist?
