On behalf of a friend who is involved in getting a statue of Voytek "the soldier Bear" erected in the Scotish Borders where he was last billeted, I would be interested to hear from anyone still around who served with him. Military rank of machinegun water carrier

by

Need my granddad’s military rank

My granddad - who unfortunately I never met - was Polish and served in the Polish army around 1923 and 1926. I am trying to find out the name of his rank. All I know is that his role was to carry water around to cool down machineguns. I would appreciate to hear from someone who is familiar with the ranks of the Polish army pre-2nd WW.

Oral History Maczek Documentary

by

I am a student at the school of arts, Sint Joost (www.stjoost.nl) in Breda the Netherlands. Currently iam doing a research for my next documentary about General Maczek.

I am trying to find information about the period he spent in Edinburgh after the war (1947-1992).

For example:
- is it true he worked as a bartender in a hotel? Does this hotel still
exist? Who was the owner of the hotel?
- where did Maczek live? What street?
- are there people in Edinburgh available who were close to Maczek in this
period? People that knew him personally?
- are his memoires (Od podwody do czo³ga) translated in english?
- etc...

I hope someone will help me, because its hard to find some good information about his Edinburgh period.

Greetings,
Ronald

Tracing my Polish roots

by

My father, Edmund Paul Chyla, was born in Gydnia, Poland on 27th April 1907. I believe he was married in Poland and had four children. He was interred in a concentration camp for some time during the second world war, escaped and arrived in the UK via Belgium and fought in the Polish Free Army.

I never knew what happened to his family in Poland.

I know that he would never have divorced his Polish wife, and would not have her presumed dead to enable him to marry my mother.

My mother died in 1972 and my father died in 1979.

I feel a space in my life because I can't get any answers to the questions I have with regard to my Polish connections and don't know where to start looking or asking.

Try the Polish Army in Exile records at APC Polish Enquiries, Building 28B, RAF Northolt, Westend Road, Ruislip, Middlesex HA4 6NG; email, polishastdisoff@northolt.raf.mod, giving as much detail as you can on your father's unit and dates of service. Also enter Polish Army in Exile records on Google for other websites. Good luck.

Help needed in making a short film

by

I am making a short film at the moment and wonder if anyone here would be interested in participating.

The film is about the experiences of people when they arrive and settle in this country – but the story is told by their children or even their grandchildren.

The children or grandchildren don’t need to know why or how they ended up in Scotland, but they will be encouraged to talk a little about some aspects of their early life here.

How their parents or grandparents coped with things like the weather, the people, housing, shops, school etc, etc.

I understand that these children may also be very grown up now and I will be happy to talk to either men or women, or older children – the only stipulation I have is that they should have been born in Scotland.

It is a short film of around 10mins, so I am only looking for snippets of information. This will then be added together so that several people are seen to tell the story of how they came to settle here – the idea being that one person’s journey is essentially the same as the next person.

I would be very grateful of any help you may be able to give and would ask that you pass my contact details to anyone you think may be interested in participating.
