With the white you can always go into the file and add any color background you want. Colored background paper will cast that color across the model so the white is the least intrusive to use and easiest to replace in Photoshop, as are any corrections for contrast and lighting.
Ultimately though you are best to discuss this with the editor to see what the magazine is looking for and what graphic style works best for them.
