It is a royal pain in the butt to take the inners out, break-in the cam, and then put them back. But you have to.

I did everything right: primed the oil system, primed the carb, got the timing close by rotor alignment, eos additive. Engine fired immediately, and kept it running, blah, blah, blah....

Custom MME cam, flat in 50 miles. I was advised to take the inner springs out, I thought it would be OK like the old days when I built SBCs. It wasn't. Don't forget, you are using 1.73 rockers. SBC use 1.5. 553# vs 480# on the lifter/cam with 320# springs.

Don't take a chance on your new engine.

to answer your question, VR1 is one of the best (what I use). Brad Penn break-in oil is proportedly THE best for break in (I have no experience with it).
