Response to Ramblings

George,
I'm responding to your post after I've read the
rest of the posts . The Boss/4vCleveland iron head is
one of the most challenging ever produced . In the
"SK" engineering books I am priviledged to have copies
of , more space is devoted to head , cam , and intake
experimentation than any other prototype engine listed.
Remember we are 40+ years past the development days. I
would hope we have learned something since then . The
problem is 40years ago , outside influence was not even
considered due to the "top secrect" attitude back then.
The large volume ,low velocity intake port needs a
very high vacuum source to efficiently flow air . At
302 or 351 cubic inches production piston speeds are
too slow to create enough vacuum to "see" the true
flow potential. On the opposite side ,the exhaust side
was designed around a "bounce flow" technology . In
other words push it up until it hits the roof and hope
the exhaust scavenging will pull it out . This is why
headers , especially open headers , make big power . In
the sixties the long rod technology used to help the
horribly anemic 289 heads was applied to the Boss 302
and the power band went beyond 9000 and was dead below
5000. Skip to next post
