I used to think not brushing was good. But with my friesian if I don't brush the manes and tails, they become all ratted and so tangled that I would end up pulling more hair out even with conditioning, and detangling.
I have found that braids work, but you can' leave them in forever....you have to take them out, wash and condition.. let the hair dry and then re-braid.
