Cavities in Horses?
by Julie
Has anyone ever had any problems with caveties in their horse? I always thought that a horse's teeth grow and get worn down throughout it's life and therefore cavities weren't a problem. My vet says my older mare has a cavity that may be of concern. Anyone have any notions on this??

We use a dentist service called Equine Services. They travel the US doing dental work on horses. They really do excellent work! Doug or Marilyn I'm sure would answer any of your questions. 800-785-9758

I'm looking for Friesian owners/breeders/sellers, etc in Pennsylvania...anyone know any? Also..does anyone know of any annual Friesian shows/activities in PA or OH?
Posted on Oct 2, 1999, 10:31 PM from IP address 152.163.201.53
I just acquired a Friesian from CA and brought him here to PA. I don't know of anyone else who has one here (so far). I know that somewhere on the Internet I saw that a woman in PA was selling two Friesians who had (to my understanding) little or no training. Other than that, I haven't heard of any others in PA.

Hi,
There is a lady with a stallion in Bloomsburg, PA. Her name is Annette Hackenberg. Her stallion's name is Leonardo v.V. He is from Twin Lakes Ranch( www.twinlakesranch.com). Son of Aswyn van de Pluum and model mare Rozalinda(centerfold for Horse Illustrated last year). I have seen 4 of his crossbred offspring. All were black, 3 of which were solid. I purchased one of them recently. A 9 month old, solid black colt. "Bossa Nova" is his name. He looks acts and moves ALL friesian, except a little thinner. His full sibling is going to be for sale thru the lady who bought the mare, Becky Glover in IN. Also you can look up friesians in PA at www.agdirect.com or www.horseclassifieds.com. Annette and Becky probably have stuff posted there. Good luck! Amy

I've got a question and need some input. What if there was a fabulous stallion who had a white star. Neither association
allows a white star on a stallion but they do on a mare. There are a lot of stallions who do not have any white but their
offspring does. If they do not allow this for stallions but do for mares how does this help. Let's say he was was tested
and made really high scores. Do you think that they should allow him to be an approved stallion or not? I will appreciate
all input. Thank you!

Gay,
Personally, I don't think it matters. But my vote wouldn't count because I don't feel that horses should be discounted for ANY color on them. It shouldn't matter if they have a white star, stocking, blaze, or even if they are tobiano! I will always prefer an all-black horse... but these color and marking restrictions are dumb. I've heard stories of expectant breeders literally breaking down and sobbing beause an otherwise well-bred perfectly healthy and friendly foal had a big star on it's forhead. It's really sick.
Posted on Oct 1, 1999, 6:02 AM from IP address 192.58.199.27
To preserve the breed we love so much and stive to always make it better, there needs to be strict standards in place for the horses we breed. A white star does not in any way interfere with all his positive qualities, but for the sake of the breed, he should not be allowed to breed.

Hi all! We have finally come out of our heat induced hybernation and have been having a ball with our crosses! Love Daencer went to a driving clinic where the instructor fell in love with her! She also gave a dear friend her first driving lesson. To see this...please go to http://members.aol.com/tntarab/love.htm
I have new pictures ( not at all professional) on a page of our yearling Friesian cross filly. She is more glorious every day! Visit with Rain Daencer on her page at http://members.aol.com/knazeera/rain.htm
Isn't fall glorious? We are now getting rain...wonder if grass will be next?

Next year is my filly, Velvet's, judging for Star. Does anyone have any advice or tips on how to train her to get her legs under her more? Also, does anyone have any good grooming tips? I've heard about feeding the suppliment "Black as Night" during early spring, summer, and fall.

Julie, see my post below under respect.
That is the best advise anyone can give for judging ~ showing ~ training ~ in hand.
The tape can give you advise for getting engagement ( using the rear engine ).

Julie : USDF :
United States Dressage Federation.
They have a great web site, but I don't have it !
Most horse sites on the WWW have links to it,
try the FNN, I'm sure Shaana does.
They used to sell the tape from that site,
if not available, try the American Warmblood Society, I know they had it available not to long ago.
I'll look around, and if I find it, I'll let you know.

Julie, I used "Black as Knight" about 1 and a half months before this keuring, and I swear by it now. I bought a 3 year old mare in May this year, and she started turning brown right after I got her. It's hot and sunny where I live. She came from Michigan. Black as Knight is very costly, so I bought a 5lbs. container of it to see if it would make a differance. Two weeks after she had been taking it I noticed a big change in her color. By the time of the keuring she was "totally black". And I'm the proud owner of a "star mare". It was worth every penny! (p.s. I ran out before the keuring and bought a 40lb. bucket. I'll have plenty for next year when my 2 year old goes up for star!)

Does anyone have info about the Stallion THOR that crossbreeds? I've heard some bad things about that breeder who owns him. Has anyone had any experiences?
Posted on Sep 13, 1999, 6:34 AM from IP address 192.58.199.27
Yes, I know Thor, and the owner, and he is very above board, and a very good breeder. I have know the owner for the past 7 years, and I have yet to see any thing shady or "bad". What exactly have you heard about him?
Posted on Sep 18, 1999, 7:11 PM from IP address 207.203.248.13
I have heard from a reliable person, who bought a horse from him, that he beats his stud horse (he did this in front of her), and that he treats his horses like chattle. He sold this girl a lame horse and then gave her grief about taking the horse back. She's not the type to make up stuff.
Posted on Sep 20, 1999, 5:42 AM from IP address 192.58.199.27
I know the breeder very well who owns Thor, as well as the horse who was said to be lame. Thor's owner would take a beating with a big stick himself before ever hurting a horse. As far as the woman not making things up, the horse is not and never has been lame, so that was made up as well. If you don't have first hand knowledge about something, you should not slander people. It is cruel and ugly to do so 1
Posted on Sep 20, 1999, 10:58 AM from IP address 216.169.64.204
Audrey, I think whoever told you this might be on drugs. I have known Thor's owner for several years and have never even seen him even raise a hand to him. Thor was here at Proud Meadows for the Stallion Testing and was so spoiled. Thor's owner has also handled horses for us many times at shows when we were there. Would we ask someone to handle one of our horses if he beat them....I don't think so. I think you need to see this kind of stuff first hand before you put it on the internet.
Posted on Sep 20, 1999, 1:42 PM from IP address 207.136.25.227
Thor is a very well behaved and loved animal, I have never seen horses, stud or other wise better loved. Joe is a very capable stallion handler and he is always willing to talk to someone, wether it be to share information or set the record staight. Please don't be miss led by what someone tells you, friend or otherwise. If you doubt him, maybe you should meet him or talk to him. At least give him the benefit of the doubt and the opportunity to defend himself and his beautiful horses.

I cannot believe what I just read concerning Joe Myers, THOR's owner. I will have you know that I had to go off and view something else for awhile and then come back here to respond to this nonsense. (otherwise, I would have totally gone off the deep end... and would have regretted my harsh tone at a later date)
First off, let me tell you something about Thor. (whom I had the priveldge of spending about a week around at Equitana). This is the sweetest, dearest, kindest of stallions. This is a stallion that I personally saw offer affection to his young rider, and caretakers. This is a stallion that walked past hundreds of folks at Equitana on his way to his stall on the floor... without so much as a peep toward any other horses (ie.. mares) on that very same aisle.
This is a stallion that endured hundreds of folks coming into his stall, and being hoisted up on his back for a *Feel of a Friesian*. This is a stallion that made dreams come true. This is a stallion whose warm breath kissed the cheek of young children.
This is a stallion with an aura of an *old soul*... that knew his PR job was important, and he well deserved the compliments he got.
This is a stallion, who's demeanor goes way beyond Equitana as I was approached a month after Equitana by a young women who saw him. This women said that when she looked into those eyes, and was able to touch that soft nose, and feel that warm personality come forth, she had tears in her eyes. This was a women that had her own horse back in Florida, and it wasn't until THAT MOMENT in time... when she met THOR, that she really knew what *BEING CONNECTED* to ones' horse REALLY meant. She asked me to tell the owner that, and till this minute I had forgotten it. (I must remember to tell Joe, as she asked for his number or email to tell him this personally, and I had just forgotten). This is a women that told me THOR was very special.
HORSES that are *beaten*, or abused in any way.... don't tend to be real people friendly ... in my experience. Quick movements toward them... make them shy away. Gee, I can't tell you the amount of quick movements made toward THOR during Equitana! ROFL! And that big puff-a-lump just put up with all those folks that just wanted to be *UP CLOSE* and personal with a Friesian!
NOW, about Joe Myers... THors owner, and caretaker, and friend...
Joe is probably one of the most soft spoken men I have met. Joe has sensitivity that you generally have a hard time finding in a man. Joe shows compassion. He gives freely of his time and money to those less fortunate on a daily basis. Joe donated a foal to a raffle that was to benefit and organization in need. (can't say the same for some other organizations I know of when it came to donating a foal for a good cause).
Joe is one of the most eloquent of *writers*. He writes with a knowledge of his subject, and compassion for the cause, and kindness to his fellow man. And mostly... I think Joe comes across as a person that believes in the adage: *Do unto others, as you would have them do unto you*.
Joe's children are hard working, and well mannered, as Joe as instilled values into his children... and taught them to have respect for all living things. Joe nutures... he does not harbor ill will towards people or animals. He is fair, and truthful, and forthright.
I for one, am absolutely appauled at what was said here. I take offense at off handed remarks coming from *hear-say*... and consider it quite libelous. Perhaps it would be better to go to the source, than to spill this trash onto a Forum such as this. If you just email Joe, he WILL give you the curtesy of an answer.
I went to the source to find out where this is coming from, and it is funny to me that the *IP address 192.58.199.27*, belongs to two people posting... with different names? Now, this is puzzling... and quite disheartening.
I would trust my own flesh and blood in the hands of Joe Myers... as well as my animals. I think it might behoove someone to email him personally and ask him whatever questions you may have. As I am sure you will get an honest answer to your questions, that will be done with grace & style... something Joe Myers is known for. (josef@mail.twd.net)
With Regards, and apologies for being so long,

I had read this post when first put in, and was immedately disturbed by the content.
Although I don't know Joe Myers or his horse personaly, I have corresponded through e-mail.
He does seem to care an extreme amount about his animals, and Friesians especially.
He is one of the most concerned and educated breeders I have heard from.
And ! ~ he does put into words, passions and concerns for these horses ~ better than anyone I know.
I Agree with all, this was an unsuitable place to air this laundry.
So glad to see the responces .....

What a response! This has certainly given me pause for thought. The info I got comes from someone I trusted, but what you all have written makes me wonder... Does anyone know if Thor will be at the Friesian Extraveganza next year? I'm going to that and I'd love to see for myself.

I hope you will realize that someone is lying here and it isn't us.
There is a person who is trying to give Joe a bad name. I hope you don't fall into this again for anyone. I hope that you will do your homework before posting something that slanderous again.
Thor will not be at the Friesian Extravaganza. That is a FHANA sponsored event and Thor is FHS. Although you can catch Thor all over the East Coast as he does demonstrations and shows nearly every other weekend. I know that he will be at the Equine Affaire in Maryland this fall.
Posted on Sep 23, 1999, 2:40 PM from IP address 207.136.24.17
Why not e-mail or call Joe yourself to find out where and when they will be somewhere. He is always nice, so you don't have to worry about him having "hard feelings" toward you after all this stuff said about him. The "lame" horse in question often travels and performs with Thor. Not bad for a guy with so many lameness problems.
Posted on Sep 27, 1999, 1:53 PM from IP address 216.169.64.8
I stand corrected. The Equine Affaire North East will be held at the Eastern States Center, W. Springfield, Massachussetts from November 11th to 14th. If you wish to see Thor you can also plan a trip to his home in PA. Just call ahead and let them know you are coming. They have a cabin for your use to overnight on weekends. If you are close enough to visit Maryland then maybe Pennsylvania wouldn't be that far. Just email them, I'm sure they would be delighted to have you visit.

My name is Jamie Martino and I am writing in response to the nonsense posted about Joe and Thor. I know this is a little outdated compared to when the original message was posted but I recently found this forum and wanted to post my opinion on the subject!
I just want to say that I am very glad Shaana Pritchard replied as she did! She defended Joe just as he deserved!
Let me just tell you my experience with him! I met him at the Horse Expo here in PA in 1999. He had his Stallion Thor alongside him! Thor is the most incredible horse I ever met! Thor has made me a full time Friesian lover just by his beauty and gentle loving nature! Joe is a great guy and allowed me to get a "Feel of a Friesian" as Shaana stated in her post! Joe allowed me to sit on Thor in 1999 and 2000 and take photos of me on him! How great is that? He tolerated me all 3 days both years asking questions, taking lots of photos and just hanging around his big black beautiful baby! In 1999 he even invited me to come up to the farm to come ride Thor and all his other Friesians! He is a great guy and the statement that was orignally posted about him being a "bad" guy is totally untrue! He made my dreams come true! Just to sit on Thor was so awesome!
Thanks to Joe I am addicted and can't think of anything else than owning my own Friesian Stallion someday! And I hope he turns out EXACTLY like Thor! Just like Shaana said, abused horses are NOT people friendly....therefore Joe would not be able to put little kids on Thors back if he was beaten!
Both years I seen Thor at the Horse Expo he was making alot of little kids dreams come tue, as well as mine!
I love Thor so much I bought his T-Shirt and wear it just about everyday! LoL
Thank you Joe,
you are a great guy!

i just got to this iste, and i am in awe at the wonderful responses to the question about Thor. I know joe, from the list and from meeting him at a weekend show in Penny. thor is quiet and lovely and Joe, well he is a graceful man, with a sexy smile, and a twinkle in his eyes......or was that Thor. Hmmmmmmmm. Well, I think that the person who gave out information about Thor and Joes' handling of him was quite mistaken and should cease to speak of Joe in a negative way. Joe is a wonderful man, a great daddy, super husband and a lover of these horses. Don't lose any sleep Joe, we love ya Baby.

I have had the pleasure of getting to know Joe and his family over the past several months. I can tell you that they are some of the nicest folks you'd ever want to meet. Joe and his horses have a love and respect for each other that unfortunately, some people will never experience with their own horses. I have never been to a farm where horses, from babies up, will come to you for affection, and all of Joe's horses do this. They are all very friendly and lovable. Thor is one remarkable stallion, his personality, disposition and intelligence is something very rare. Thor and all of Joe's horses are handled with nothing but love and kindness, and it shows.
