I have a cedar strip canoe made by the Harris Boatworks on Rice Lake back in the 70s' from an original Peterborough Guide form. It was made the old way with eastern white cedar strips and did not require either a canvas or fiberglas covering to be water tight. However, now soaking the canoe for three or four days does not swell a number of the joints to maintain it's integrity.
My question relates to what I should do now. I don't want to put a canvas cover on it or fiberglas it as some people have recommended. Is there some "miracle" product I can putty in the joints which will adher and repel water from getting in??? Or do a number of the strips have to be replaced??? If so who does this work???
Any replies to my questions would be most appreciated!
