| $50 bucks for the after party? | January 13 2006, 11:18 AM |
Now that's funny.
It's the crappy Island party at double the price. That's a nice thank you for coming out. I suggest we pick a bar to go to instead and let the organizers enjoy their $50 party. |

Oh come on, $50 is about $60 cheaper than that crappy 60Euro party in Rome.

Rome wasn't 60, 30 or 40 euro. Still crappy though. |

"It kills me how any of this is a surprise to you people."
Typical comic-book-guy style arrogance. I guess YOU told US so, and WE just didn't listen.

A huge risk gouging international paddlers. They'll just look for alternatives of which there are many. |

Whats the big deal here. The entry fee for the races hasn't even been anounced yet. Lets say its $50 a person. All the other stuff is optional and you can make your own arrangements. No one is forcing anyone to buy into all the other stuff. If your that poor pack your own lunch and take the TTC. Find a friend in Toronto to stay with. Theres plenty of teams that might rent out rooms like a temporary bed and breakfast. This is what happens alot during the Olympics. |

Rumor is the per paddler fee will be in the $150 range for their entry into the event. Plus the $50 party fee. Where is this money going? |

That's scary and would be a shame because many international teams would just stay away. As someone in Canada who's already spent allot of time, effort and money in 2005 to qualify for this event I'm very upset that this organizing committee does not appear to be a nonprofit group. Rather they are looking to make a tidy sum from the paddlers. Either that or they vastly underestimated funding coming from other sources so now they have to jack up everything else to overcome budget shortfalls. |

At any amount aproaching $150/paddler my team would probably withdraw from the CCWC. Use the money for Sydney.
$150/paddler is just stupid and I hope it is an unfounded rumor. |

Is this a sharifa/TCBA deal or a DBC deal. If it is say even $50 a person that is a lot of cash. Where is it all going? |

DBC has nothing to do with the financials of this event. Sharifa and Paul Henderson have everything to gain by charging $150 plus per athlete. Why don't they publish the fee? Most likely because they want teams to book their air and hotels first and then hit them with the fee when they can't back out.
This will not be good for Canada's image in the dragon boat world.

Maybe they haven't finalized all the costs yet, now there's a novel thing, waiting till they know the costs prior to setting the rates, of course they could do it like Berlin, change the rates every week right up until the event.
Rumours are out there to undermine the event, source is obvious, the rate of $150 is as absurd as the Australians being told that the course is only 1 metre deep! Go figure - anyone bitter out there??
Who's running the event, A registered non-profit organization - that's a novel idea in Ontario. Must piss some people off royally!! |

Okay, this is a first !!
Actually the IDBF are running this event.
Anything can be a non-profit event, as long as no body makes moeny !! ha ha |

Wow. Rumours about someone spreading rumours. That's funny. So what's the source?
I for one am glad if somebody is holding this organizing group to account. It's one thing to announce that there will be 100000 spectators. We can all laugh that one off. But to proclaim a world class venue and deliver what's currently on the table? If the course is sub-par then fix it and if you can't then at least be honest with the community about what they can expect so they can make an informed decision on whether to attend or not. |

Wow $150 is outrageous... Of course that isn't actually all that much more than the Island now is it?
$100 is where it should be and would be in line with a lot of premier events. |

I think the real cost will be around $50-$70 per athlete.
That being said, if you include bus ($50), shuttle ($50) then you've already added $100.
In Rome the transport to and from the site and the airport was all included in the 50 Euro per paddler fee. Don't know why toronto has to charge so much. It's not like toronto is more expensive then Italy.... |

22 Athletes @ $170.00 (Paddling Fee, Transport, Meals)
Team Cost $3740.00
5 Teams per category from Canada - approx $56,100 for the Seniors
(Men, Women & Mixed)...the same for open and Junior.
Now add the other teams from outside Canada.
That's A LOT of moula ladies and gentlemen.
No wonder Mike and Sharifa wanted this event. |

Dude, many of the Canadian teams are Toronto based and will not be needing to pay for shuttle service either from the airport or from the hotel. So cut $75 per paddler off for us locals.

$1,100 per team then.
This must be a local event then.
