Announcements at MIDBRF!!

Sunny Lam, if you're reading this... for God's sake, the time has come to hire some professional -or at lest COMPETENT- announcers for the MIDBRF! At the very least, then:

A) NOT a 16 year old, Chinese girl who speaks English as a third language, after Mandarin and French, or;

B) NOT a hostile francophone who seemingly doesn't have the patience to make slow, deliberate, careful announcements at a festival for all to understand, is in no way proficient in English, or else seems to be terribly annoyed with the fact that even has to make announcements in that filthy, pig-dog language, because after all, he figured they'd chased us all the hell out of town years ago.

"Rain, rain, go away"? As annoying as it was -and frankly it's received so much commentary that it’s almost inconceivable to think that you haven’t noticed- it doesn't compare to, "Keep doing! Keep doing!", from a festival in 2000. That was yet another 16 year old Chinese girl's attempt to encourage the teams in a particular heat.

Lookit, the volunteers were great, their hearts were all in the right place, and God knows you couldn’t run an event without them, but if you want to get your blood up because you fancy me culturally insensitive, then consider how sensitive you’ve being to everyone else by bringing in people in whose sole job is communication, and who then proceed to indifferently murder the language. Athletes need to hear announcements clearly, or else need just a bit of focus time. A qualified announcer mightn’t engage in inane banter, and sing-songs, to drive everyone around the freakin’ bend!

I grew up in this town, and like many Montrealers, have come to take as commonplace the extraordinary fact that people here speak two, three, or more languages in the course of a day, and think nothing of it. However, the mere fact that I’ve always wanted to be a fireman doesn’t make me qualified to do the job, and because my grasp of the French language is NOT 100% spot on, I wouldn't DARE presume to announce in French, either. It’s offensive to hear your language butchered over a loud speaker, and there IS such a thing as being unqualified for a particular job, ethnicity aside.

How about forming a broadcast team; one to announce proficiently in English, one to announce proficiently in French, and yet another to announce proficiently in Mandarin, and/or Cantonese? For the love of God, you pour so much energy into having things run properly, how about expending a little of that on your team behind the mike? The people you had making the announcements in English could barely form a single sentence off the cuff. What are you doing, Sunny? That important component of MIDBRF had “amateur hour” written all over it, as it always does, all weekend long, every year.

You know what? If you want to be cost efficient, then find some kids from a local broadcast announcer’s school, or from the numerous CEGEP’s or universities in town –advertise for the job, and audition them- toss ‘em a couple of bucks, give ‘em the gig, and there you are. Half of those aspiring sports announcers would probably kill to do it for FREE, just to be able to list it on their CV’s!

Really, now… let's hope this is the last time we all have to suffer this! Teams deserve better.

Gee I think someone should take a valium and chill...
But seriously 4 things to improve the festival next year

Stuff The MIDBRF can control...

#1) Move the food vendors back to alongside the race course.

#2) More portable toilets

#3) Quicker race results postings

#4) Better announcers (Why not get the people from CTV sports like GWN or Centre Island does)

Stuff MIDBRF can't control but it would be nice to have

#1) a new scorboard.

#2) Better PA system

Annonces à MIDBRF !!

July 31 2006, 2:24 PM

A) PAS 16 ans, une fille chinoise qui parle anglais comme troisième langue, après mandarine et français, ou ;

#2) More portable toilets

*******agree

#3) Quicker race results postings

*********was better than last year but could be a touch faster, but I must say they are doing a good job for 18 crews/

#4) Better announcers (Why not get the people from CTV sports like GWN or Centre Island does)

**********you must be kidding!! Are you there for racing or for the announcers?!

Stuff MIDBRF can't control but it would be nice to have

July 31 2006, 3:12 PM

Just got home. Too tired to write. But what the hell...?

Can you please... PLEASE.... in the name of all that's decent, and holy, get a new ****ing announcer!!?? I can still hear her voice in my head. It's making me crazy. I'm going to eat a ****ing gun. Tonight! Right now! The incessant droning, and ad libbing, and mispronunciations of this adolescent girl have driven me completely round the ****ing bend. Her voice is in my head, and it will never leave until I blow my ****ing brains, right out the side of my skull! I'm ready to surrender, and I'm not even in the ****ing WAR!

Do you know that this is precisely how they extract information from detainees?

You think I'm kidding, don't you?

I'm not. It's an extremely effective technique, and actually considered cruel. If you did this to an animal, you'd have the police, and the SPCA on your ass: Blast noise through a loudspeaker. It has to be something that absolutely annoys the living **** out of them. Over, and over, and over again. And keep it going. All day long. It makes them crack. By the end, they'll tell you their own mother is a two-dollar hooker, who makes it with circus clown wearing red shoes -ANYTHING- just to make it stop!

It took her four ****ing minutes to explain that there were two free cases of water waiting for each team captain at the registration table.

There, how long did it take you to read that!?

I COULD HAVE MADE THE ****ING ANNOUNCEMENT!!

"Cheer for your favourite team!"

Let me tell you something sweetheart, and listen well: My favourite ****ing team??? That's MY OWN ****ing team!!! Stop telling me to cheer for my favourite team, when 6 boats made up of people whom it would be humanly impossible to care any less about are panting, and huffing, and battling their way through to make it into the D final! I don't give a ****!!!

(Jesus mother****ing Christ, where's my gun? Where's my rope? I can't take it any more!!!! I'VE LOST MY ****ING MIND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Yeahhh... that was a classic, wasn't it? I think few will ever forget. Somehow... only in Montreal. Could you envision something like that from the Ottawa people? Toronto? Sudbury, even? Nope, definitely more professional.

Only in Montreal would you be serenaded by a 17-year old Chinese girl ad libbing "Rain, Rain, Go Away" over the festival PA system. ****ing amateur hour.

So....what?

Who the fu-ck cares? Did she do her job in relaying relevant race information? If so, then why are you riding on her ass for adding a little levity to the announcements?

Oh, excuse me, your puritanical sensibilities were offended by her non-military snappiness, brevity, and consiseness.

If you don't like it, create your own regatta and do the announcements yourself. Almost 200 teams, and the festival was only about 20 or so minutes behind schedule. Face it, she was one of the reasons for a regatta that was really well run. If you can't accept that, tough sh-it.

Non-military snappiness??

Although now that you mention it, that guy from M*A*S*H would have been better.

I too agree that the announcer did a wonderful job getting people to their designated areas on time. She also relayed heat information promptly (cant say that for the pinup-board).

I say give her some slack - I'd take her over nothing anyday. I'd probably take her over anyone on this thread too - she was rather uplifting.

Ability to read beyond a third grade level should definately be considered when choosing an announcer next year. The 2 second pause that she required to find her place at the end of each line was excruciating.

who cares about announcement, i think she did a great job, didn't bother me at all, compare to all the other regatta, at least she did her part clearly and can be heard all the way to the end of the stadium

you guys should know what time and race # for the events ahead of time anyways, grow up~ people , gees~
