How long do you think it will take to paddle a 22km with a little current?

Had a practice this summer where we logged 21 km, took about 1 3/4 hours. No current to speak of, but we were really given'er.

I would wager a guess at 1hr 50min.. not including the time spent at the locks.

Figure about 6min for every 1km for an average team. This factors in bailing the boat, the odd drink break etc. which can probably be best done by sections to keep the boat moving the whole time.
If the little bit of current is with or against you subtract or add a few minutes respectively for the total trip. Same with wind.

Therefore abot 2 hours and 12 min. total.

Now if there is a portage.....throw this estimate out the window.

With their background in endurance paddling, it'll be interesting to see is how the Pt. Claire boat will do. Should be a good showdown with them and the powerhouse Telus boat.

Good luck to all who will participate!

How's your spine?

22k in a dragon boat? Must have been conceived by a chiropractor! I've done 12k in an OC6. Couldn't imagine paddling only on one side for even that distance.

Same old story:

Everyone favours "powerhouse Telus" to win;
The Wong's come on strong to spank them, take the gold, and send them home pouting.
Maybe you ought to start changing your estimation.

Telus was actually a combination of 7 different crews.

Re: 22km D-B Marathon

September 10 2006, 9:29 AM

Yeah... here we go, now....
Telus didn't win because they had a mixed crew. Ohhhhh. THAT's the reason they didn't win. Because ordinarily, they would have won, ya see? So... it was the mixed crew from so many different teams that prevented Telus from winning....blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.... From what I saw, the Wongs also raced with some of their "stars" absent. So WHAT, then...?)

Listen, er, member of "powerhouse Telus"... It's undignified. You bring "outsiders" into the boat because you feel they can cut the mustard, and measure up to the lofty Telus standard, and then you blame them when you fail. VERY typical of the "big kid" mentality.

Stop with the excuses. You're sounding more like "pussy-ass Telus".

But then so is every single other team out there. No wonder this sport will never be recognized at a serious level.

I SURVIVED THE 22KM!!

September 11 2006, 9:33 AM

Alright, so my shoulder was a bit sore and my bum finally has feeling again. All I can say is, I'm still alive and what a heck of a race the 22km marathon was !!

I'm happy (and surprised !) that I survived it, even more, I'm proud that my team stuck through it. The weather was challenging in the beginning but nothing we couldn't handle. Definitely worth doing the challenge again next year.

Great job to the organizers to have come up with this concept. Thank you for the experience. And congratulations to all the paddlers invovled. We did it !!!!

Wong's beat Telus in 22km race. I wonder what the ex-wongs paddling on Telus thought of that!!

It looks like there is a new rivalry in MTL with the Wongs and Telus.

Telus beats Wongs in Lachine
Wong's spank Telus in Montreal
Telus returns the spanking in Sherbrooke
Wong's beat Telus in the 22km race

Should be an interesting Quebec cup...

The only thing I'm reasonably sure of is that both the Wong's and us will be rummaging through Normand's cooler at the end of the weekend looking for something cold and tasty.

22km was won by Wongs in 1hr 25 min
great race with awesome moves in the final 7km by both steers ie Wongs and Telus. A real chariot race with contact, pushing and shoving, playing chicken with the bridge pilons.I ******g loved it. Can't wait for the rematch next year. Way to go Paco. Great event.

Oh, and Telus is going to spank the Wongs very soon.))

If that time of 1hr 25 min (85 min) for this race is correct then whoever measured the distance is full of sh*t.
Think about it. That is averaging under 4 min a km. or under 2 min for every 500m.
This distance is no more than about 15 km.

More like 17-18k. You can look up distances at nrcan. It's still an order of magnitude beyond any of our usual races (plus the first half is on fairly open water). I might even be convinced to try it next year if I'm feeling masochistic.

Endurance Race

September 17 2006, 4:24 PM

Hey Guys,

If you want endurance try the Great River Race on the river thames in London, UK.

It's 35km, our team of 16 (7 girls, 9 boys) did it in 2 hours 28 minutes, the course record set by a dragonboat last year was 2 hours 6 minutes!

Thames is down river , so not quite the same.
Anyway , it is time , not distance that is critical.
Both great races.

According to the Great River Race site, it's a 22 km course. I heard it was excellent paddling and a real kick to go down the Thames, hearing Big Ben banging away in the center of London.

*OW!*

Son of a B!TCH, my shoulders are still killing me.

20 KM...! What a killer race. God DAMN, man, I worked my freakin' A$$ off today.
Props, Pascal. That's a beast of a course like nothing else.

This is a race you definitely have to work into your summer training schedule. 250 and 500m sprints are one thing, but in a long distance race of 20 km, you'll very quickly find out how your team discipline, technique, and stamina hold up.
