Last chance to help raise money for up and coming athletes at MCC! Not much of a road race, and the entry fee is a bit steep for what's offered(essentially a community fun run), but it's more of a fundraiser for MCC than anything else. Have fun on Sunday! |

Are you promoting it or crapping on it? Make up your mind.
Good luck on the run to whoever is going this year. |

I prefer riding the fence.
On the one hand you have yet another organization trying to make money off DBers by packaging their event as some kind of "challenge" - what fun (not)! And to boot, the organization in question is a sprint paddling club that considers DB to be only one step above lawn bowling. If they couldn't make money off it, they wouldn't have anything to do with it.
On the other hand, there's no harm in responding to demand. If people are willing to pay that much for that kind of event, then why not give them the opportunity and raise some money for yourself while you're at it?
I think MCC could have made this a classier affair by advertising that they'll use the money to help fund - for example - a paddling program for at-risk youth or something. Who knows, maybe they will end up using the money for that kind of thing.
The MoFos have an awesome model for fundraisers - they combine team fundraising with charitable giving. The MCC should take note. |

It's a fun race ... lots of people do it ... if MCCC can make money by enticing dragonboaters to do something as a team other than paddle db, pool paddle, drink or complain on the forum, then more power to them. The previous posters are getting a bit carried away. Not eveything needs to suport charity. Sprint clubs are rarely rich.

previous poster was right, most canoe clubs don't have a lot of money. Good for MCC if they can run a race.
To the poster above, yes, it's great if Mofo's do a charity thing. And before you start throwing stones at MCC for not following suit, I trust that you spend your time and money raising money for charity on a regular basis? And I am quite surprised that you seem to speak for all the paddlers at MCC re: looking down at dragonboating. It's obvious you do, as only an ignorant person would presume to speak for another group, and you're not that kind of person, right?
And to answer that question I'm sure is on your tongue, ya, I'll be supporting them by running. |

Gypsy,
I wasn't going to respond but your posting caught my attention. You said that you'll be supporting MCC by doing the run, but the run took place last Sunday, December 10th. Do you mean that you supported MCC by doing the run, or do you mean that you're full of it and didn't even know when the run was taking place?
In any case, my argument was that MCC could have had a classier event if they were raising money for someone other than just themselves. I pointed to the MoFos as a good example. And yes, while I was at it, I took a shot at flatties by saying that they look down on DB, just for kicks. What else is a self-loathing DBer supposed to do?
In MCC's defence, most of their athletes are kids so the amount of money available to them is likely a bit more limited than what's available to most DB teams. And yes, I'm making a generalization here, so get over it. So ya, I can see why MCC would only raise money for themselves and leave the charitable fundraising to others who are more equipped to handle it.
Not a big deal, either way. I was just killing time on a slow Friday afternoon...

Give me your address and I'll send you $20 so you can buy a mirror! I was making a legitimate (though whiny, I'll admit) argument. You included personal insults in your response and stuck your neck out at the same time. When I called you on it (a tad aggressively, I'll grant you that) you get all defensive on me. What gives? Anyhoo, now I'd argue that the original point of this thread has outlived its usefulness. We should just make up and be friends. Where's the thread about drag co-efficiencies and lane depth.... | |
