| - I see there are many teams from eastern and central Canada going out to Calgary to win a berth. How do you think these teams will rank vs the strong Western squads like False Creek and Gorging? |

| Re: Calgary Race off | August 4 2007, 5:34 PM |
It will be a battle for the top 3 .The FCRCC crew is mainly the B crew as the A crew is apparantly staying in Vancouver training to get ready for Australia but still will no doubt they will be strong . The Masters look strong and gave FCRCC a run for the money in Richmond winning the first 2 heats but they are also just going for the senior ccw spot and a chance for the top 3 in the Canadian Club Crew .Pacific Reach has pulled in some of their old crew members & gone outside to help out because they did not do so well in Alcan and ended up in the B division .Gorging will do better then they did in Vernon as they lost control of their boat numerous times because they were not used the the dreaded Dynasty boats .Without Warning will be somewhere in the pack but not sure they will make it into the top 3 .The Imperial Dragons are to show and I think they should do ok and the Piranha's ( spelling ) as well ....have a feeling they entered just to hopefully grab 1 of the remaining spots because they didn't feel they had a chance in their own divisions . Calgary Race club will also be there but somewhere towards the back of the pack, not enough experience and a new crew .Pond Scum from Sask has jumped in as well but they will end up back of the pack and entered as a seniors crew to go up against the Masters who more than likely will dominte them .I think they are just hoping to grab a leftover spot after its all over .Para huti & Yahoo ( are they entered )will be back of the pack, not enough strength to go against the Vancouver teams & TO teams |

I'll add a comment to this thread:
This is our first opportunity to paddle in the western division and we are really looking forward to it. Losing the Central raceoff to Mayfair and G&G forced us to go out west to try to qualify, but it also gives us the opportunity to race head to head with the strong western teams - which we have wanted to do for quite a while. Congrats to Mayfair for really stepping it up this year. I would have loved to see False Creek and them go head to head.
Lets hope the weather is better than our Sudbury festival this year! |

| Re: Calgary Race off | August 13 2007, 8:55 AM |
DBC intentionally chooses the date to correspond with CCA so none of the teams with flatwater paddlers can be competitive. In the long run, it'll hurt the sport since dragon boat nationals will never be considered an important race. They have to make it a qualifier or it'll just be the same teams who race at False Creek. |

Actually, CKC had nothing to do with it. the location was set years ago and the date was coordinated with the city of Calgary.
DBC re-scheduled an NTT one year because of a conflict with CKC nationals. They are sensitive to the issue. this one is purely logistics.
that being said, don't think flatwater paddlers care that much anymore anyway now that they aren't getting paid or subsidized and they realize they'll have to train together (a lot) to beat the top crews. |

i don't think pacific reach will be that far up there, and definately not higher than Masters of D'Zone. Probably end up below Without Warning, as well.

Don't see Chiro's beating Gorging Dragons, sure if you look at times you'll be left with the impression that they are a sub 2:00 crew, but the reality is they've drawn good lanes and ridden buses all year long, unless they get a ride I think they'll be in tough to finish in the top 3.
Not to slag them, just an observation, In Toronto it took everything for there steerer to hold onto the Mayfair wash in both the heat and the final. |

The Chiros were in lane 1 in Ottawa and had no competition in lane 2. I hear they are going to Calgary with their B squad. Probably because of the cost and ocmmitment involved in the trip out west. Apparantly they are still trying to fill their roster. |

Did you see the lane setup in TO? There was 6m lane width and 5m ghost lanes between lanes. Wash riding would have been pretty difficult. And besides it looked like all the teams pretty much stayed to the center of their lanes. |

How is that possible? Rosters need to be consistent from one race to another. Unless they didn't use all their roster spots in Ottawa, Stoffville and at Marilyn Bell altogether. |

| Re: Calgary Race off | August 13 2007, 2:20 PM |
I think you get to change up to six names on your roster. if they raced with the same roster at all those events they could conceivably replace six people and still be in compliance with the rules. Still, that wouldn't exactly be a 'B' team. |
|
Claudio
| Re: Calgary Race off | August 13 2007, 2:31 PM |
You can actually change more than 6 people. You can have up to 30 paddlers on your roster, which would mean a team could have ran with 22 names on their roster and changed up to 8 while still keeping their 6 eligible changes for next year. People need to start thinking outside the box.
As for TO... this was the course where the worlds were held last year which means there were ghost lanes and the depth was even across the field. The top three teams each held on to their own lanes and raced professionally. |

There is no changing. You have a maximum of 30 roster spots. Each time a new name appears it takes one of the 30 spots. Once you hit 30 names you can no longer add.

| Mr Manager | August 13 2007, 3:27 PM |
Wouldn't smart teams keep a minimal roster so that they have the option to play around? As long as you do not exceed your max of 30 names you are alrigth. Once a name is on of course you can't ommit them but that gives room to play.
As for the CKC... I'm glad DBC has scheduled this event at the same time. This allows the sport to grow without throwing flatties in the equation. Pick one sport if this bothers you.

Chiros are a very good team. However, at the Toronto trials they had paddlers from Collingwood, Toronto, and a flattie from North Bay. I don't know whether the crew will be pure Sudbury paddlers, or whether these additional paddlers are part of their Calgary roster.
I think there is a substantial gap between crews like Mayfair and G&G, and the Chiros. In Sudbury, where there was no wash riding in the final, Chiros were open water behind Mayfair. |

Yeah, but Masters of D'Zone are, like the name suggests, competing in the masters category. I agree with you on the first two, but who do you think will be the 3rd crew to grab a premier mixed sanction to go to Malaysia? I think it'll be tight between the Chiros and Pacific Reach, who are no longer racing as a masters crew. |

The masters will be racing the cdn clubs just like everyone else for placing but the difference comes in the WCC placing .They could place in the top 3 in the cdn's and then also win the WCC seniors spot which would mean a forth place team in the cdn's could be the third team for the WCC premier spot

Let me guess, you are an "experienced" paddler that has been on "highly competitive teams". You have raced many times at the "natioanl and international" level. You are on a "competitive" team that "will be in Calgary". You have first hand knowledge of the teams in Western and Eastern Canada because you regularly compete with and against them.
You believe the Masters will be 1st to 3rd. Some dont think so.
They will throw it down in Calgary in 2 weeks and we will see.
