Imperial Dragons
Mayfair
Scotia Spitfires/Rouge/Beach
All have had at least one almost-undefeated season with some big wins (eg. TIDBRF or GWN)
It's debatable which one is the "best of all time".
Recently Mayfair holds the edge. I'm not certain, but I think the Imps have more all-time wins. Scotia was hot in the same time period as Imps, and overlaps Mayfair as well.
It's a pick-em, as far as I'm concerned.

Right on Seat 3. It's not just a team -It's a dedicated way of life. Very few teams have ever made this special committment.
The Silvermasters follow the path of their elder paddlers from years gone by to the various beer tents of the province to philosophize and honour the spirit of dragon boating while partaking the soothing fluids from the keg of the draft. |

10th season, same team

it's Mayfair, no question. If you add up all the top 3 finishes in the last 10 years you will find that mayfair has more than any other crew. As a matter of fact, I think Mayfair has only missed the A final 3 or 4 times since 1998.
I think a few years back, James Haslam put together a list. Even then Mayfair was the top crew. Since then Mayfair has been even better. |

Thank god you posted as an anonymous poster. This is a cut and paste of the last posting:
"MCC Hurons are the best their is and the best that their ever will be!!

I think the word "their" should have been THERE. Twice even. LOL
Gosh I hope you are a better paddler than a writer. How else can this be explained? LOL |

That's wrong. Imperial Dragons were at the top of the A-division at least a full year before Mayfair made it into B division. To my knowledge, ID has never finished out of the A division at any time and were just as dominant as Mayfair is today in the crew's early years. You're just too focused on what's been happening recently. |

Wrong my friend. While the Imps may have reached the A final a year before Mayfair, if you count all the top 3 finishes you'll find Mayfair has more.
Partly because Mayfair raced a lot more than the Imps did. That alone says something.
Maybe James will repost that list. |

Since someone brought it up, I'll speak to the database that I still maintain for dragon boat championship results. This database only goes back to about 1998 so it may not include EVERY possible result for these teams, but I think it captures most of them.
By sheer numbers the clear winner in the debate is Mayfair, with 19 Regatta Championships as well as 6 second place and 7 third place finishes. (32)
The Imperial Dragons have scored 10 Championships, 9 second place and 7 third place finishes. (26)
Scotia has 8 Championships, 12 second place and 3 third place finishes. (23)
One interesting thing that I noticed is that a large number of Mayfair's championship total comes from a couple of smaller, GWN-run events including the now defunct Summer Sizzler and the 3000m Challenge. Without those results they would only have 9 championships, which puts them much more in line with the totals for the Imperial Dragons and Scotia. I'm not saying you shouldn't count the Sizzler or the 3000m race, I only bring this up as a footnote.

"I'm not saying you shouldn't count the Sizzler or the 3000m race, I only bring this up as a footnote."
I assume you are also including a number of Welland sport regatta victories...so they don't "count" because certain crews chose to not race at GWN events? Better not include Summer Sensation results either, or, or, or....
All three are good crews that have won their share...not need to qualify the level of the competition.

I would take out the sizzler because that was a race league and not a single day event. By its very nature a ton of crews not in the vicinity wouldn't be included. Also, quality victories matter otherweise TAD and their penchant for entering and winning the tinniest of festivals would be on this list. |

Even with James' qualifier about the race league/etc., I think Mayfair has won more than nine regattas.

| Like I said, a footnote. | August 28 2007, 12:00 PM |
I didn't exclude either the Sizzler or the 3000m (or any other "tiny" regatta) but I did want to point out that a number of Mayfair's wins came through their complete DOMINATION of events that were typically only attended by Mayfair and crews closely linked to GWN. To me this skews the results somewhat as they cleaned up in their own sandbox, so to speak. Attendance by outside crews was spotty. There were a few exceptions throughout the years, like Scotia in the first year of the Sizzler, BMO and Hanalei a time or two in the Sizzler and the 3000m, and Big Fish in the 3000m. But I was making no comment on the quality of the event.
I think the argument to exclude the Sizzler actually makes sense because it was a race league and not a regatta. But I'm not going to present a new count here, the numbers are not that important.
But if you want to be picky you can take down the Imperials bronze medal count by one as I included a third place finish by an Esso Imperail Oil team by accident. |
