Greetings all!
I just wanted to thank all those who assisted with the rankings this year. Just when things looked overwhelming I always seemed to get a helping hand from those in the Dragon Boat community. It makes a huge difference and even though you'll never get the full props you deserve I grealy appreciate the help. If anyone else is interested in lending a hand in 2008 just email me at:
truerankings@hotmail.com
Also, with respect to 2008, I put out a post and got a lot of good feedback for the new inclusing criteria for festivals. Here's how it will work:
1) Festivals that had a competativeness ranking of one from this year will get included next.
2) If it is clear that any other festival is likely to have a competativeness ranking over 1 it will also be included - however it must be clear!!!
This will help ensure that the workload for the rankings is manageable (and possibly open up other avenues for development) and that only the more competative festivals - where teams are likely to show up with their top crew - will be included.
Cheers and great season of racing - now get back to the gym!

Can you tell us which Festivals have a competitive factor of 1. I am sure it was mentioned at one time or another, but it would be nice to see the list here. |

That could possibly qualify as the most pleasant exchange on the forum ever. |

How does a festival receive a competative factor? Is it based on which crews attend and whether they are in the top 100 ranked teams? I tried to find the methodology used for the festival factor but could not locate it. Anyone know? |

I'll be adding a description over the winter.
The top 100 teams are assigned points between 100 and 1. The total points are then added together and divided by 2179 (the total points possible if all top 100 crews showed up), then multiplied by 10 (to make the score out of 10).
The points are based on an exponential curve, and look something like:
Rank 1 - 100 points
Rank 5 - 83 points
Rank 10 - 66 points
Rank 25 - 33 points
Rank 50 - 10 points
Rank 75 - 3 points
Rank 100 - 1 point
Keep in mind that the notion of competativeness is all relative, and a "competative festival" for a team ranked 25 will be very different than the team ranked number 5. The indicator is used just to get a rough idea how many of the top crews showed up, giving a much heavier weight to those towards the top end of the ranking.
