The "Mofos" was just an alias for Marge's Knitting Circle who dominated Milton. Marge and her gang were actually the ones racing in Ottawa - and spreading crochet tips.

If I had to speculate, the results are ready. They just wanted the Ottawa Citizen to have first dibs before posting them on their website.
Not being from Ottawa, I can't confirm that. Just a guess... |

I think last year it took weeks to get the results up.

From the picture gallery,
"Apparently the paddling took it's toll on some. Here, Luci Mofo sleeps soundly amidst all the noise at the starting tent following her team's race."
Hilarious!
Did all of the MOFOs legally change their last names to Mofo? |

| 152??? | June 23 2008, 5:09 PM |
I would like Mr Brooman to confirm a 152 for Events Alive. We raced all day and there is absolutely no way they beat the second place team by that amount. The fastest times were on Saturday and there was 3 seats over the next boat. We didn't make the A final but we defintely got to watch it. Could it be that Ottawa is giving more credit to their heroes? Common.. this would be a world record time |

Too bad they combined the 500m & 200m times.
Also, would have liked to have seen Events Alive take on Mayfair Predators with their 1:56.22. |

Events Alive looked great out there, disciplined and technically beautiful to watch. With 2 Olympic athletes on the team, 1:52 is not hard to believe |

Just noticed the 1:52.22. Whoa. What were the conditions like in Ottawa? Or are they that smoking? |

No wind to speak of on the first day. Slight cross/tail wind on the second day that came and went |

Re: 152 for Events Alive
The 152 time posted for Events is a mistake. The final time on Sunday for Events was 156 and change. We were 3 seconds behind at 159 and change. There was a strong cross wind. Those were the times announced right after the race. And I have no doubt they are correct. The 152 time was announced at the awards ceremony after but wasn't correct. If it were then they would have had open water on us and they definately did not. On the flip side, if it were correct, then we did a 155 which would be awesome! |

1:52 isn't accurate there is definitely something wrong there. Its more like 1:56.

That article from the Citizen is full of bull. As a resident of Ottawa, I can speak for most of the residents that we do not have a problem losing to EA. Other than the two Olympians, this year's EA team was made up of the most of the coaches from Ottawa, some of who were on World Championship CSDC teams. These are the people who have brought the local teams from nowhere to where they are today. Without them, you would see a heck of a lot more boats getting timed at the 2:30 to 2:40 range rather than the 2:00+ to 2:10+ range. Hats off to EA. |

Yes, Events Alive was clocked at 1:56 for the final 500. They were 43+ sec for the 200. |

Ottawa Observations:
Interesting format adding the times of the 200m & 500m
Fast water from the race times of Saturday...is there a bit of a current?
A expected Chaos was the strongest Toronto based team.
The TIDBRF appears to have regained the upper hand in terms of competitivness.
Final Toronto Team Times combined 200 & 500:
Chaos: 2:51.58
CN Aquatrain: 2:55.53
Jetstart: 2:55.56
Mofos 2:57.15
Quicksilver 2:57.61
Does this mean Aquatrain is now a faster team than the Mofos and Jetstart?

| Great festival | June 23 2008, 8:49 PM |
All in all, another great festival. My team did not make the trip to Ottawa this year but I thought I would enjoy the Rib fest on Sparks street.
Got to love Ottawa, 190 teams and they are always on time. Great to see Events Alive, wow can they paddle! Even in the 100 and 200m finals when Sudbury tried to jump the start (probably got a stroke or two in before the gun but good for them), they were able to finish hard. An impressive showing by Events Alive. Don't know who The Merge are but they surprised alot of people. I have never seen a tie in a dragon boat race but Gung Ho and The Merge tied for 3rd in the 200m final with Gung Ho taking 3rd spot overall due to the combined times. Gung Ho keeps improving year to year and will be a force in the future. Other notables were The Chaos who performed well and were in contention for top three the whole weekend as well Adrenaline who were decent.
Missing a few teams who were in Toronto this weekend as well as the Dragon Beasts from down east but another great festival. Congratulations to all. |

| 200m and 500m times | June 23 2008, 8:52 PM |
As one of the organizers of the event (although not on the racing side), I'll see what I can do about getting the separate 200m and 500m times posted online.
I don't know about the accuracy of the 1:52 for Events Alive although I do know that the conditions were pretty fast (a swirling wind, both cross and tail, either way would provide a bit of push).
It turned out to be a pretty good weekend for racing after what was a miserable week for setting up the event. Lots of rain meant lots of puddles and a messy team area. Thanks to all of the teams participating for making the weekend worth the hard work.

"Gung Ho keeps improving year to year and will be a force in the future"
As long as they can keep filling out their boat with flat water paddlers they will certainly be a force in the future. |

This is a super crew - there are about five former flatwater paddlers in it, and the rest are "pure" dragon boaters. Not that there's much of a fuss about that distinction in Ottawa (no matter what the Ottawa Citizen article said.) Almost every crew trains out of the Rideau Canoe Club coached by a large group of sprinters who are also very experienced dragon boaters. (As an earlier poster noted, most of these people were on the Events Alive crew.)
They train hard and have great spirit.
It was a great festival - low key, few problems and excellent entertainment. (It was hard to tear myself away from "The Arrogant Worms" to watch the A final.) John Brooman and his crew have worked hard over the years to resolve any problems as soon as they arise. The 200m finals were an exciting way to end the event - all levels of crews enjoyed the change - and we were done much sooner.
Thanks to all the folks who came from out of town. |

Hi all,
There was a typo in our timing sheet. Events Alive did run the fastest race of the weekend and it was a 1:56.22 not 1:52.22. I apologize for the mistake. It was a great weekend and another great success. Thank you to all teams, supporters and workers.

I coach Gung Ho and we are pretty much a pure dragonboat team. We have 5 people who paddled flatwater in the past Myself, Jeff Randle, Matt Higgins, Lindsy Richardson and James Morgan.
Out of those guys only Lindsy is paddling any flatwater right now. So far since the beginning of the year we've had 11 on water practices and we're really happy with how we did.
Events Alive is a group of great individuals who do practice flatwater canoe/kayak and alot of them have competed at a very high level in dragonboat. I know most of them personally and it was great experience for Gung Ho to be able to race against a world class crew. As a coach from a team who was beat by EA we don't hate them at all we like them because they push us and we don't have to travel halfway around the world at considerable expense to race a very high quality crew.
I think dragonboat should be about a crew doing the best they can do. We practice twice a week and we do the best we can do with the time and resources we have (I'm not quiting my day job to paddle...). I don't think there are any sports anyone could join where you could compete with athletes that were on or close to the national team. You just do your 10 km run (or whatever) and be happy with your improvements even if you are doing a 40 min 10k and the winner is at 30 min.

The festival was better run that in the past:
1. Could hear the start thanks to the cannon
2. Starter was better - though still not able to stop the running start in the 100m.
3. Designated tent areas helped stop the battling on Friday night
4. Entertainment and Atmosphere were great
5. Volenteers super nice
My biggest complaints:
1. No results for Sunday - we can post the results on a high tech tv screen minutes after the race but we can't get something on the web???
2. Long days for teams doing both Saturday and Sunday - liked the old format where you were either Saturday morning or afternoon with no 6hr layover between races.

The whole hating events alive thing has to do with the attitude of the kids in past years - and their mockery of the sport.
The events alive crew from this year didn't have that attitude - a lot of them being from CSDBC and who have competed in DB and respect the sport.

Hey Yalll...
We just got off site a few hours ago from the tear down. I just wanted to explain the results to you. The reason why we do not post the Sunday results online until Monday afternoon is because we have an exclusivity deal with the Ottawa Citizen for the results. They are are very generous in the amount of advertising they sponsor us for the entire year and one of the fullfillment items is to place a half page in both Sunday and Mondays paper of the results. I realize it can be inconvenient for those that do not get the paper however the finals are are always online by Monday afternoon therefore fullfilling our contractual obligations. I hope everyone had a great weekend both in in Ottawa and Toronto. We had a blast putting on this years festival. Tonight we celebrate with our staff. Tomorrow we begin on 2009. |
