I'll try my best to keep everyone up-to-date with what's happening over in Penang with my Blackberry. Unfortunately, my blackberry doesn't let me post directly to the forum so if some people can send me their emails to piranhas<at>gmail.com I will send you the results as I can send them.
They only thing I ask in return is that you repost the results on this thread.
Have fun racing each other in a warmer climate 18hrs from home. Support that IDBF. Can someone dontate $150 to them for me while you are there. I was looking for a charity this year to donate some money to. That $150 donation is probaly what you all are paying to go to the party that will run out of food and beer.
But have a good time.

Try to show a little respect to the men and women who trained hard and spent a lot of money to represent their team and country. Don't go dragging teams through the mud just because you weren't good enough to compete.

The Seniors used to beat the Preemies, back in 2003/2004 and 2005.
The crew essentially split then to the Senior National Crew and the Club crew, and
the Preemies now have the upper hand.

Penang post for Rob
July 30 2008, 9:15 PM
This is a post from Rob's email
Hello
Thanks again for agreeing to helping me keep the world informed on how the CCWC's are going. I'll post as soon as I can
Today is 2000m. It will be two sets of 13 boats. For Premier Mixed (which goes at around 9:30 and 10:15 am), Mayfair will lead off for group A. They will be followed by:
Nanyang Tech Univ (sng)
Isokaze Aioi Peirob (jpn)
SMU (sng)
PNP patriots (phl)
Broadwater Dragons (aus)
Plentitude PSKM (mal)
Putrajaya Dragons (mal)
Bay Area Dragons (usa)
Team Pyros (phl)
Dubai Flying Dragons (uae)
PDRT fireblades (phl)
Singapore PC (sng)
Group B
Gorging Dragons (can)
Penang canoe association (mal)
Pacific west (mal)
Pacific dragons (aus)
PG Dragon Boat Assoc (mal)
Verdun Adrenaline (can)

Brisbane River Dragons (aus)
GRC Dragon Team (cze)
Piranhas DBC (can) !
Wasabi Paddling Club (usa)

Great job by the Canadian Mixed Crews! World Class dominiation!
I have to wonder though about the sh!t job that the IDBF is doing getting the Brit's (and other European crews) to participate in the Club Crew Championships. Seems like his countrymen are more interested in a leisure paddle in Venice than actually competing in a real dragon boat race.
What's up, Mike? Why such a lousy showing from the English side?

Venice vs. Penang?? Let me see...include wife and family or girlfriend into decision...the decision is made already.
Not everyone aspire to paddle in IDBF events, especially if they've done it already. Look at the value you get for the dollar spent and to most who skip it, it makes logical sense.

Memory bad cuz I'm tired but here is what I remember. Will fill in tomorrow after some sleep.
Premier open (32 crews)
1. Moravian Dragons (cze) ~9:40.
2. Nymark (cze)
3-9. Can't remember but Montreal men and Sudbury are here (and in that order)
10. Rip the fondue 10:16
11. Piranhas 10:20.
In response to the one poster. Nationals was very strong but I'll wait until the end of the event until I can tell whether nationals are easier or harder. The placement of the Piranhas won't be a good guage since we doubled up open and mixed with just our mixed crew over the 2 days and raced different lineups that included many non-malaysia piranhas. than the four day regatta we are at now.

Keep an eye on those Czechs! Moravian Open is strong. (Like many of the club crews in North America, these folks work ordinary day jobs and are not a bunch of ex-canoe paddlers.) Nymburk is also very good. Right now in Europe the Czechs have taken over the lead from the Russians and the Germans.

Imagine 43 Canadian Teams and they have to go 1/2 way around the world, spend thousands of dollars and race each other. Look at the Premier Division and you will see what I mean. Kudos to the medal winners but its a sad reflection on the overall participation from other crews around the World. And why/how does Canada get so many entries? Is it like 5 per division?

Re: CCWC Penang Results

No country places the emphasis on mixed that Canada does. In many countries it is an afterthought if considered at all. Two of the top men's teams in Sydney did not participate in mixed. The British men, despite having a very strong women's team, and the Phillipine men did not do the mixed. The Slovaks did not bring a mixed. With the Brits who knows why it's possible the women did not want to dilute their chances in "their" races as they have been toe to toe with Canada in recent years or maybe the men felt the same way. China puts all 8 women in the stern, some kind of statement there? Certainly if you want to win the nations cup you have to enter it.

On another note, I have to admit to being a bit embarassed by some of the comments in this thread. These paddlers worked their asses off, spent alot of their own hard earned money to go and represent Canada, they are kicking some serious ass and all some of you *******s can do is lip off about what a waste of time it is. The 500m was another Canadian 1,2,3,4 sweep with the order changed a bit. This time it was Mayfair, Gorging, Sudbury, Verdun. A great race with an incredible finish by Gorging who were making up ground on Mayfair each stroke at the end. But alas it is a 500m race not a 550!! LOL A good time had by all and great sportsmanship with all 4 Canadian teams sharing the medals stage at one point.

Re: CCWC Penang Results
August 2 2008, 6:48 PM
Ah, not quite. This is a competition for clubs not national teams. They don't even allow the playing of the national anthems of the winning clubs' country.
And even if dragon boat was in the Olympics (not likely) it would be men and women racing separately. If we were to dream in technicolor then last year's women would have come home with Olympic gold medals. Not the Canadian men though. Plus you've got to figure that if an Olympic medal were on the line you'd see much more competitive teams coming out of Europe and Asia. Even Canada would end up fielding a better team.
Given what I've seen here I think DBC needs to send the IDBF a letter stating that they will advise their clubs not to register for the 2010 CCWC until a quota of teams from other continents have committed. The reality is that Canada, and to an extent the USA, is floating this championship and it's just too expensive to continue this practice unless the clubs from Europe step up. It would be much more affordable and less time in the air to support a NACCC type event here in North America. If Euro teams want to come, no problem!

Re: CCWC Penang Results
August 2 2008, 9:29 PM
If you really want international competition then the simple solution is to field a men's or women's team. That's just what other countries care about. If that isn't your style, then stick to Canadian nationals, where the focus is on the mixed. Yes Canada sweeps the mixed at CCWC's this year but have they won men's? women's? The czech's could be saying the same thing on their silly online forums. "Why are we paying 2000 czech dollars to race Nymark and Morovian Dragons" I'm not saying Canada couldn't field a top men's team as they have proven to in 2006 in TO and the women's teams out of Canada are always top notch, but the fact is the international competition lies outside of mixed races.

Hi all you forum nice people and trolls too. Since i don't have a blog or a facebook i'll just post here for now!
This being my 3rd CCWC and 5th race in Asia, I can tell you all with sincerity and conviction that I would not have missed it, and that I've already got my money out of the trip (going to HK and more tomorrow!!!)
The comraderie of the Canadians teams is second to none. To hear your team called to the marshalling area and then as you're walking out of your tent to hear the uproar of whistles, applause, and shouts of encouragement from your countrymen and women, most whom you don't know and live thousands of miles away is something that everyone on here should experience.
And it doesn't stop there. Teams from Japan, Australia, Singapore, Iran, all congratulation one another after the final races. The Czechs who came 1st and 2nd in the 200m ushering RIP up to the stage so that all 3 teams could be in a photo. Trading jerseys and telling stories, warming up by playing a deranged game of walking football with a mini-soccer ball, dancing at the party, and ya puking your guts out becuase you ate some bad pasta. That's what the event is about more than the times or the medals.
It was an honour to steer RIP the FONDUE, to watch these 23 guys gut it out in the heat and humidity and smog, to the point of collapsing after the race is done. Start saving your pennies for Macau 2010.
Montreal Men finished 5th or 6th in the 500

The CCWC were the best CCWC for Canada, and not the racing or the medals, but the ongoing support by fellow Canadians, that cheered each other Canadian team. This CCWC seemed(I could be wrong) that Canada was one team, whether you represented Canada North, South, East or West, it didn't matter. We all had respect for each other and encouraged each other to "Go for it, and compete hard" I would like to thank all of those who cheered Canada on, and I hope we can bring the same attitude and respect in any event or competition, locally or internationally. To all Canadians who went to the CCWC, thanks for your support and encouragement, we really showed the rest of the world who Canadians are . . . PFD
