when i was in eritrea i had a kind of strange sensation: half of me belonged to that wonderful country ,its landscape made of vivid sunsets, the palm and eucalyptus trees, chattering in the wind, the sky so wide and immense which gave me a sense of eternity(i could spend hours looking at that african sky, following my dreams and imagination.my favourite dream was Italy, because i was and am of italian nationality.
italy was my country ,so half of me belonged to italy.but the very moment i came to italy,i discovered that the only thing i had in common with my country was my passport and my italian language.all of a sudden i discovered that my heart was african, my way of looking at life was eritrean.there, i had left in asmara so many eritrean, italian and american friends, too.asmara was my country with its beautiful bouganvilleas, the gentle rain and soon after the sun shining again on its wide streets ,where i used to ride like a crazy on an old bybicle.asmara with its eucalyptus woods and its brown hills going down, down to massaua .that's the scent of youth! where have we gone now?to which world do we belong? my dear american friends ,i apologize for the long letter but i have so many fond memories about eritrea, that i could never stop writing about it.though, my heart will never be able to say definitively "goodbye eritrea". i thank you too, dear unknown friend from another continent.i wish i could write english in a more complete manner to express myself better than i actually do.i've written lots of poems and novels about africa and the sickness it brings once you leave it.in italy we call it "mal d'africa" or in english, i presume, "africa sickness " thank you again. AROUND CHRISTMAS IN 71 IN MASSAWA, IT RAINED FOR MAY BE 1 MINUTE, THE DROPS WERE HUGE. THE DIRT WAS A FINE POWDER AND SO DRY THAT THE DROPS WOULD NOT SOAK INTO THE GROUND. THEY JUST LAY THERE IN THE SUN LIKE CLEAR TRANSLUCENT EGGS. IT WAS ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL THINGS I HAD EVER WITNESSED. I SHOWED IT TO MY HOUSEGIRLS AND THEY WERE SO DELIGHTED ,THEY DANCED ON THE VERANDA.THEY WERE A BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE.
