I am mom to Daniel, 8 non verbal autism and Gerald, nt(neuro-typical).
I would like to tell you that most schools are great, but i cant. Most are pitiful. Mine was horrendous.
All you can do is know what your child needs and stand firm till he gets it.
The most important thing i can say about your upcoming meeting is to not sign the IEP until you are 100% satisfied that it is appropriate for your child. Dont let em fool you into thinking you have to sign it that day. There can be more than one meeting. My son's last IEP consisted of 6 meetings...and is 28 pages long. If they say they cant start services until you sign, which is kinda true on the first one, you can sign the IEP stating that you agree the school can provide the services but you do not agree with the services provided. (This is all on the assumption that they are not going to offer what is appropriate.)You could get lucky and go in and they offer what is appropriate (yeah when pigs fly).
Is Alyx verbal? Did the school do an evaluation too? Did it concur with the one you received elsewhere? Did the person you received the diagnosis from also offer program recommendations?
At the bottom of the message board click on autism links and you will find many links to find information. If you have anything specific I think someone here should be able to help you.
Can maybe offer more help with the answers to my questions, but if not I wish you luck at the upcoming meeting, and let us know how it goes or if you need more help.
Thanks for joining us!
