Response to RE: Crohn's Disease

I think that the when DMSA is used alone, there are limited side effects. The DMSA binds to the mercury and escorts it safely out. The only way that I can perceive that it is causing extra reactions in the gut is if as it stirs up the mercury, it aggravates the Candida. I mentioned the GFCF diet earlier because that is what I read about Dr. Holmes patients that seem to not be having reactions.

And in your case, Scap...I think since your daughter does not need the ALA, you are very lucky. The ALA crosses through the blood-brain barrier and loosens the mercury in the brain and stirs it up. Then once it is in the blood stream, the DMSA can bind to it and escort it safely from the body. The ALA can be dangerous in that you don't know where the mercury will go or if it will cause more damage in the brain. For example, if you use too high of a dose and much mercury comes out at once, perhaps much will make it back into the blood stream, but a litle bit will be left behind to re-bind in the brain in a different area. This can cause a host of varying reactions in the child. The child can have crying spells or in my son's case (when I made the mistake)his eyes were dialated. (a symptom of mercury poisoning) You wouldn't think that dialated eyes would cause such a problem, but my son would cry and throw himself down and cover his eyes. He seemed dizzy. We went to one of his favorite restuarants and he cried and looked at the lights and was miserable. It took several days. (and adding DMSA) before he was back to his typical disposition. Most of the problems with other parents come when they add the ALA. Some parents want to go on forever just chelating with the DMSA, since that experience was so good, and other parents have had nightmares when adding the ALA.

This is from another board....

Subject: FYI- If you child has "stalled"

Just a couple of things coming out of DAN, with a few children. Those who are the MOST toxic.
If you have done DMSA, then on to DMSA/ALA and stalled, consider retesting the hair and see what is left, not what is coming out. In a small group of children, the other "nasties", as lead etc. are
rising; in some cases higher than when they began. Going back to DMSA alone for a couple of months, removing these metals....then, back to DMSA/ALA is improving the results and speeding up the chelation
process.
I would hate for those of you doing this on your own not to have this information.
If your child is doing worst "off" than on...check their gut...do a stool analysis, and treat. Behaviors improve, and the child does better.
This should be as easy on the child (an parents)as we all can make it.
Hope this helps someone out there.
