Friedreich's ataxia with retained tendon reflexes: molecular genetics, clinical neurophysiology, and magnetic resonance imaging

Abstract
Lower limb areflexia is generally regarded as an essential criterion for the diagnosis of Friedreich's ataxia (FRDA). We describe a family with a recessive form of early-onset ataxia in which one member had a phenotype typical of FRDA whereas another, with retained tendon reflexes in the lower limbs, did not have electrophysiologic evidence of the usual severe afferent axonal neuropathy of FRDA. In contrast, somatosensory evoked potentials, eye-movement recordings, and MRI of the head and cervical cord provided results highly suggestive of FRDA in both patients. We performed genetic linkage analysis in this family, using markers tightly linked to the FRDA locus on chromosome 9. Inheritance of identical paternal and maternal genotypes by the affected members, but not by their unaffected siblings, provided supporting evidence that this disorder may result from mutation within the FRDA gene or is tightly linked to the investigated loci on chromosome 9>>
You see, "Something goes wrong w their immune system genes" even when they are in Utero or even before their genome is decided for final display in Uterus. It is in the combination of father's and mother's genes in Utero at the time of conception. WE need more research in Human embryology now more than ever. Neurophysiology and neuronal devt of brain cells all start w the cells in embryo only. "blastocyst", "gastrulation" processes need to be studied by scientists like Dr. Rodier. Hoxa gene1 and hoxa gene2!!
The same thing happens to cases of HIV infections in later stages of the disease AIDS. There are cases of Dysphagia, where the person experiences gagging reflexes w swallowing. They have to be spoon fed or tube fed. There are cases where GERD disease present the same and spitting up food occurs. Then there are disease or conditions, where a person returns to a state of being like a NB baby totally dependent upon other caregivers around. Geriatrics (med for the elderly) is full of cases like that. Alzheimers is a famous one. The immune system genes have to be studied more in details, now that we know they exist as MHC genes on Chromosome #6. The jumping genes are my favorite ones. I hope they will catch them and fix them soon.
Yeah, the symptoms related to dysfunctional reflex disorders are common in all learning disabled people. It is not necessary for vaccines to induce them. For they were there long before vaccines were given or are discovered. Huntington's chorea has full of movements
that hx has documented, if I remember right. Certain relgious cults even can induce such "reflexes" upon command thru magic or voodoo powers.
Anyway, what is your point to all these? Are you using any special interventions to address these issues or what? My son had few reflexes retained. It does not change or get in his way of daily life, as long as we know it is not seizures. We don't see any need for any special tx to correct or rectify those symptoms actually.
