Hi there!
My understanding of why many SLPs encourage a PCS system over sign in kids with ASD is this:
1. Sign language is transient. A picture is present longer, and kids with visual processing problems do better with a picture in front of them.
2. More people can understand a picture than sign. This is particularly true of peers. The child using a picture communication system can make him/herself understood better, therefore cutting down on frustration.
I understand why you want to graduate from a PCS system, though. Often those books don't hold enough pictures as the child builds his/her repetoire. May I ask how many PCS are in your child's binder?
