There may be several sub types of ASD, that even if they have 5 cases for each, it could easily show up to
40-50 cases per 10,000!
You see, there are several Chromosomes involved for a given set of symptoms as our researchers have found.
Autismnet also says the same thing about three major divisions of ASD resulting from Congenital or classic
Kanner's autism, Type II or comorbid autism, Type III or NIDS based.
So your guess is as good as theirs. At least I am glad to see that they have registered their findings w this data base for now. Check out the link I have given above.
As far as what they can do, is still a major drug discovery process. Genomics and Proteomics! It will be few years, before they can really come up w customized meds for management of each child's behaviors or any other problems. I am waiting and praying that it would happen soon!!!
Etiologically, I am not sure if they can do anything at all now, as there are more than one trigger that can result in autism, w an "innate" or "inherited suscpetibility" for each child even before birth! We will see.
