He is not hearing middle sounds in words. He will probably get something called a phonemic awareness program (or thats what we call it here). In the meantime, you can help him by playing a rhyming game so he listens to the sounds and matches them. One of you says a simple word like dog and the other has to rhyme it. You keep taking it in turns until one cant go or repeats. Then the other person starts. As he gets better, you can make the words harder.
