can be used for something you didnt mean to do too...
For instance:

"im sorry i ran into your car"
"im sorry you took my words wrong"
"im sorry you didnt understand my perspective"
"im sorry our opinions differ"

a person says im sorry for alot of things, even tho you didnt intend to have the effect your actions, ect had you can apologize for it having the effect it did ... altho im sorry should only be said when its meant...imo
