For all of us advocates

July 20 2002 at 3:38 PM

Advocacy takes over your heart first,
It bankrupts you financially,
It eats up all your time,
It owns you.
When you advocate
For the students in need,
You may find yourself
Standing alone, on the top of a hill,
Waving your sword at a windmill.

Advocacy takes over your life.
In the end, it defines who you are.
Your eyes have lines around them,
From squinting to read the fine print,
Even you get tired of listening to you!
There is no end, more children come,
You are going to move on to something else,
But, "There is this kid..."

Advocacy takes over your mind,
Everything you see, every plan you make,
Includes...inclusion.
You sit by yourself in your car,
Arguing outcomes with the rear view mirror.
You are rarely understood,
Most often trivialized and insulted.
Your motives are always questioned.

Advocacy takes over your soul,
You have to do what you do,
Someone must and the someone is you!
A student in need, needs what you know,
A student in need, must have somewhere to go!
It's someone's child, not yours, and yet...
There is a real need now...come to me child,
Together, we will make it right!

'THANK YOU FOR BEING THERE AND TEACHING US ALL'

'JUST ANOTHER PARENT'
