I went semi-cheap (for what there is out there now).

Bogen / Manfrotto 190XPROB Tripod Legs (Black) with 488RC2 Midi Ballhead (Quick Release)

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/480325-REG/Bogen_Manfrotto__190XPROB_Tripod_Legs_Black_.html

Bought it at a local photo shop. About same price as B&H, and Bogen has a rebate going.

Great combination of weight, portability and sturdiness. Good for my Canon 40D and lenses up to 200f2.8.

Both ballhead and legs made in Italy. Good finish, not quite Gitzo but at half the price (or less if compared to the carbon fiber offerings).

One thing we have in common..>>>

We both SOLD ours!!...IMNSFHO, the lens is nice, but not all THAT nice...A bit too bulky and heavy to be a full time "walkarounder"....And for some reason, many sports venues get "jiggy" when you show up with a long gray lens...
L glass is sort of "overkill" for the average amateur....But...The legend lives on!!

Look at the Manfrotto 488R2. It's a 'midi' size and weight. Has panning capability and adjustment compared to the old 3-axis is extremely fast.

Light, and it came with a plate. Generally on Arca-Swiss system the plate is extra (starting at $45). An extra plate for this R2 system is $15.

I highly recommend this combo: aluminum 190XPROB and 488R2.
