Let's see, that makes Ted about 16 when I got married :-
Second year in a row I cashed in my points from the BMW credit card (great card!) and we're doing two days at the Ritz Carleton club level. Dinner reservations and a couple of jazz clubs lined up for after dinner. Don't want to use the points for flights because I don't want any part of commercial air travel this decade and my '99 Z3 does not need anything from BMW.
The BMW credit card is a good one, I got it specifically because of the deal with the Ritz but it's also a great card with above average customer service. It's not managed by Citi or one of the big banks, it's BMWs baby and it shows. Among other things it shows you all your pending transactions so you can see the results instantly each time your card is swiped so you've got a heads up if anything fishy is going on. I've never used it but it comes with all the bells and whistles you'd expect and has no annual fee unless you want to double your points, which I do for $50 a year.
Civil disobedience, that’s not our problem. Our problem is that people are obedient all over the world in the face of poverty and starvation and stupidity, and war, and cruelty. Our problem is that people are obedient while the jails are full of petty thieves, and all the while the grand thieves are running the country. That's our problem. ~ Howard Zinn
last night my store had a going away party for one of the employees at a local bowling alley. I was talking to a young employee of Filipino decent. She was surprised that I knew she was Filipino and I told her I'd been in that country often during the Vietnam war and recognized her surname. She said "oh, my grandfather was there then also!" I guess she was the grand-daughter of a VN vet who got married while on R&R in the P.I.
I decided not to tell her why we enjoyed our little vacations in the P.I. in the 1960s

A coworker at a former company was a filipina. There were several old navy guys who spent time in Subic Bay. They were unable to supress their grins everytime they saw her. Fond memories.
A buddy was an ordnance loader in Thailand during VN. He still gets wood walking past a Thai restaurant.

Many more!
We have a Marriot Card that does much the same thing as your BMW card. Wife is cashing in this quarter's points for a $500.00 Nordstrom's gift Certificate as a gift for our HS grad (middle) daughter. Money fer nuthin.
Keep in mind I was gone 4 days a week for 20 years :-)
