for those who have worn underwear: what type did you wear and why?

On the assumption that "most" freeballers have, at some point, worn underwear, the choice of what type would have probably been influenced by someone or something.
If you wore underwear in the past, what type was it (boxers, briefs, boxer-briefs, etc.) and who or what influenced your choice (parents? fashion trends? friends/peers? something else? age might be interesting here, too)? Did you ever switch types? If so, when and why? Did any of these same factors influence your decision to freeball? For those who still wear underwear (occasionally or regularly), what determines your decision to wear or not to wear?
(I'm not sure that this particular question has come up here. We've had the "what type of underwear did/do you wear" discussion, but I'm curious about something slightly different here.)
As for me, I'm 31. I grew up with white briefs and switched to boxers in my early teens. This was my own decision, which I made when I started seeing other boys my age in boxers. They looked more comfortable and manly and I found this to be true when I tried them. I occasionally freeballed in high school and college, but didn't really think of full-time freeballing as being an option. Not sure why...I guess I just thought that it was somewhat deviant and just not the sort of thing that "nice people" did. There was one full-timer in my high school (and a couple of part-timers), but I guess that I just didn't think of the behavior as being normal and accepted...or something like that.
I tried boxer-briefs a couple of times in college (saw other people wearing them, thought that they might be comfortable), but they never really worked for me. I freeballed occasionally, but mostly stuck with boxers. I stuck with boxers as sleepwear as well, sometimes with a shirt. I freeballed occasionally then, but didn't go full-time until after graduating and finding this forum. Once I realized that there was nothing wrong or shamefully about freeballing, I tried doing it more regularly and enjoyed the comfort. I kept boxers for sleeping and loungewear, but eventually started to sleep nude as well (mostly based on posts from this forum). Once in a while, I'll still wear boxers or a shirt (never both) to bed, but that's usually only if I'm too tired/lazy to take them off before plopping into bed.
It's sort of weird that I'm a freeballer, really, since I grew up in a conservative family and tend to be pretty conservative myself. I'm not a nudist or exhibitionist and not one who others would expect to go commando. If my parents knew that I freeballed, they'd probably think that it was "dirty" or "uncivilized" or something (even now). Not sure what they would think about sleeping nude. My father has always worn pajamas.

I grew up in the 60's so the tighty whities were the norm, and that is what I wore. When I went to college, began freeballing and sleeping nude That is over 46 years ago, so didn;'t buy any more since then. I know my dad also wore tighty whities, and did so until he passed away over 30 years ago.
I was in a play a couple weeks ago and out of respect to the others went out and bought some boxer-briefs so would not be nude during the costume changes. I was so happy when the play was done for the night so could go back to freeballing. I did keep the UW, so could use them again IF I would ever be in a play again and have to make costume changes.

For kids like me who grew up in the '50s & '60s there was no choice. White briefs was the only underwear kids wore. Boxers were considered "adult" (old man) underwear. Bikini and boxer-briefs had not been invented. So if you didn't like being bound up in briefs freeballing was your only alternative, one that I chose often. By the time other underwear choices became available I was so use to freeballing I never even tried them.

Ive said this many times before but Ill say it again
Taken from my blog, the freeballing blog, www.thefreeballingblog.blogspot.com
Here I go, it all started back in 7th grade ( the 02-03 school year)
from the age of my first pair of underwear, I received briefs (white) from my parents, at about 3 years old, until about 7th grade when I was around 13 years old.
We had PE every day, and I obviously wore my briefs because I thought they were comfortable, and no one had made fun of me for wearing them or anything like that, then one day my father, said to me, "Nathan if you don't want to be made fun of for wearing briefs you need to wear boxers and stuff like that, this was more coming from my sister (about a year and a half older) who had guy friends that stopped briefs, and wore boxers, She didnt want me to get made fun of, which I could understand, I saw nothing wrong with wearing my breifs still and I was used to them, but yet they still said boxers or even like colored briefs, and I went for the colored briefs, and I wore those until about 8th grade.
In 8th grade I switched to colored boxer briefs, because I wanted to wear boxers because they seemed more comfortable, but yet I wasn't used to that free feeling, so I went to in between, and I wore those until about halfway through 9th grade.
In 9th I eventually switched to boxers, and I was soo happy I did, I loved the free feeling and how it was almost daring and exciting, but yet there was one thing that I soon began to hate, how they would ride up too easily, and gat all bunched up and uncomfortable, so I would repeatedly push them down below my ass crack to not have them come back up, but yet it felt weird to have them below my ass, or they'd come right back up so I eventually pulled them back up.
Then sometime later, maybe a year later I was online, and I think I searched what I was annoyed with about with boxers, or searched everyone's favorite underwear in a poll or something, and came across this thing called freeballing or going commando and I was like what? What is this? I soon found out it meant to not wear underwear at all, and in my head I was like, people actually do that.... I soon tried it a couple of times at home maybe for like 2 minutes.
Well those two minutes went to doing it at home all the time, when I was alone, because I tried to hide it from my parents, thinking they could tell by my bulge or something, and I was really self conscious.
and I eventually realized they couldn't tell, so I would do it at home more and more, and after I got home from school I would take off my boxers, and this went on for a while, and only home because I would think people would notice I am freeballing, then one day I went out in public freeballing, and realized not one person could tell I had no underwear on.
So that next spring break of this year, which was a week off of school, I stayed at in town , but didn't wear my boxers at all, and I was so much more comfortable for those 7 days of freedom, and was soo happy, until that next mon when I went back to boxers for PE only.
After that I had freeballed every day of weekend or day of break from school, or when we didn't have PE a certain day and thats where this story ends.
And this one begins,
since before last summer I had been freeballing part time
but at the start of last summer I decided to not wear underwear at all, and I did for over 3 months, but then the first day of PE, I knew I was going be self conscious so I went back to my boxers, and for that one day or over 8 hours I was the most uncomfortable person ever, I knew I'd hate it but never this much .
So that next day which was a Tuesday, I went back to freeballing full-time and never will go back to those wretched pieces of clothing, and now freeball for PE every single day.
and so the story continues and Ill never ever go back to those annoying as hell pieces of clothing
Thats all I have to say
Underwear???
Bye Now Nate
What about Underwear???? You must be thinking of a different person????....

Started part-time freeballing age 15, on returning from summer camp where it had been so hot that i’d tried freeballing for the first time and enjoyed being free under my shorts for the whole two weeks.
I wore white y-fronts (similar to titey-whiteys) because that’s what all boys in England wore in the 1950’s and early 60s, then switched to coloured briefs when I started work at age 16 because I was no longer a schoolboy and began buying my own clothes.
From about 18 i wore boxer shorts sometimes because i liked hanging free inside my clothes but it didn’t occur to me to go commando in non-casual attire, and from about age 25 wore only boxers as underwear until going full-time fb at age 51.
For comparison, American titey-whiteys and British y-fronts:

My parents bought them 'til they gave me $ and control over my clothing at age 11. That's when I started FBing and wearing Levi 501s. I had already started sleeping nude by then.

Like most here I started with 'tighty whities', since that was what was bought for me. Wore them thru college and til I started working full time. Later switched to colored and nylon bikinis in the late 60's. Big mistake. At about 30 switched to boxers and for the last couple of years, freeballing full time. I had tried it over the years. Especially after the nylon fiasco. Sleep nude thru and since college.
Still keep several pair of boxers if I need to wear anything.

I started wearing tighty whities because that's what my mom bought me. I never wore any other type on a regular basis. I started freeballing part time around 11 or 12 just because I thought it was sexy. Only recently, like a year ago, I discovered boxer-briefs. I find them relatively comfortable as underwear goes, but I have no intention of starting to wear them regularly.
