Trying to find out how many of us use the Macs. To get us more programs.
Can you post any ideas of "wants".

Using Macs

June 26 2007, 12:30 AM

As an example of nominative determinism (my last name is Mack), I use nothing but Macs at home and in the commercial print side of my business.

I much prefer the Mac UI and the reliability of OSX in terms of running for long periods without OS-related issues.

Anyway, I'm content with the software currently available for the Mac although, as has been said, sometimes you don't know what you don't know.

I'll be interested in other respondents...

Mack

Macs

Why would any one want to use anything else?

I use older G4's but will upgrade to Intel macs soon.
As for software what I've got works. I don't know what would be better.

Old thread....

...but compelled to comment.

One of my best friends and a Brooks grad wouldn't any more consider using a PC than I would a Mac. For me, there are two primary reasons.

First is the cost. I couldn't afford one if I wanted one.

Second is the lack of software options. Yes, I know, Apple always makes the best SW, why would anyone want something else? Well, it's not just a matter of getting the job done, it is HOW does it get the job done. For instance, I prefer Corel Photo-Paint WAY more than Photoshop (and that's overlooking the price difference!) Irfanview? No Mac. RAWshooter? No Mac. Media Player Classic? No Mac. WordPerfect? No current Mac. And on it goes, for dozens of programs that I use. Granted, there are probably some Mac equivalents, but just numerically it is obvious the selections are much smaller.

I don't see Macs as being any more reliable, either. Parts are made on the same production lines, using the same technologies as PC's. I see Macs die, too. then when you need repair your choices are very limited for parts (every replace a Mac Gx power supply?) and service.

One can buy a decent PC desktop and laptop for far less than the cost of a Mac laptop or desktop.

Mac has the market share that it does mostly by virtue of being the first to recognize the role of computers and graphics. Their program, years ago, of getting Macs into schools has also served them well. As I look around to my friends with Macs, most of them are quite right hemisphered and quite unable to understand anything technological. Macs serve them well.

Well said -

From my first IBM clone in the '80's until now, I've never had any inclination to switch to a Mac, mainly because of the points you make and the proprietary nature of all the Mac products.

Sorry to disagree

Various Macs can be bought for quite reasonable prices. Several PC magazines have noted that when you add up the included items on the Mac and then go to PC machines, the cost is within 5 %.

Yes there are PC programs that do not work or have a counterpart on the Mac so I use my Intel machine to run XP Pro and these programs - cost to me = the program and Windows XP Pro. It takes at least 20 seconds to switch from the Mac Os to the Windows OS. Not exactly a major hardship.

Don't switch. Buy an Intel Mac and use your current Windows system and in the future buy a couple of Mac programs and have some fun or not.

Hope all are having a grand and jolly New Year.

Cheers,

Dave S

Ah, Dave....

That's the stuff my Macaholic friend says. But once again, there is no reason to believe that the SW that comes on a Mac is SW that I want to use. As I said, it's not just WHAT it can do, but HOW. And even if eventually I liked it just fine, there would be many, many hours of relearning to do.

I recently needed to buy a new laptop and I did look at Macs just to be fair and cuz of the Intel processor opportunities. But there is that ole price thingy again...plus no 4:3 LCD screens any more. I HATE wide screen.

Permit me another analogy. PC's are for people who want the option to open the hood and fix or modify things. Mac's are more for people who want to fill the tank and presume they will get to their destination.

I didn't mention it before, but there are also the incompatibilities of default Mac media file formats. I've noticed that Maccies that don't understand such matters just assume that everyone can open an AIF or other weird convention. I can, I have Media Player Classic and Irfanview! But certainly not in the default and ubiquitous WMP. Quicktime is more concerned with looking cool than easy to use. Quick Time Alternative (freeware) and MPC lets me do anything.

Ultimately it boils down to subjective choice, though, doesn't it?
