No kidding!!!! My wife and I went through 18 tires last year and have probably gone through ten this year. I had to buy a tire changer to try to save some money.
Watch out for tire deals through Cycle Gear ( www.cyclegear.com ). Sometimes they have sales on sets of tires. The last sale they had was on Pirelli Diablo tires. They were $159 for a set. I bought three sets. Prior to that, they had a sale on the old Dunlop D208 tires as a close-out at the same price.
