Marty Leir, besides being the first 3-time overall winner, is the only person to ride more than 15,000 miles in his first 12 MN1Ks. Since he became a Stranger in 1997, Marty has not missed a Minnesota 1000. In fact, after 13 CONSECUTIVE successful MN1K finishes (2000 counts as 2), Marty has now bagged 17,953 miles.
Apparently when you enter and finish that many times, it increases your odds of winning - just a little bit.
Let's have some feedback about the type and name of an award by which Team Strange can honor Mr. Martin Leir. It's not my call, but in the future, there must be some thing (other the Aaron's "Iron Stool") by which we can immortalize him and inspire other riders.
I always like to hear Marty talk about his past riding adventures and his future planned adventures. I don't recall him mentioning stopping or slowing down his participating in TeamStrange events.
My suggestion would be the "Leir, Tear in your Beer" award. xxxxx miles in however many events you end up participating in...
The truth of the matter is I will probably never see the "Leir, Tear in your Beer" award. One person I can call a friend just turned 80 and is still riding. I'll probably be long gone before Marty quits riding, so I'll raise a Fat Tire now and toast, "Marty, happy trails in all your adventures, I'll be toasting you on the other side when you do get an award named after you."
5,000 in 4 = Bentdahl
10,000 in 8 = Collins
15,000 in 12 = Leir ...seems logical
Coons and Simonet will be looking to do it in 11 or 10. If the lifetime limit on the Collins is limited to 25, how about limiting the Leir (for want of a better name) to 5. Better yet, maybe name it the "Lier" just to annoy Marty immensely.
