The mating dance is the part where in the Jellicle Ball the music gets jazzy and the girls dance and the boys walk in and get back to back with the girl cats.This is the "Mating Dance"!
I believe you are referring to a section of the "Jellicle Ball" that features Victoria (The White Cat) and one of the Toms (depending upon the production). Also called the "Courtship Dance." On the video, Plato (Bryn Walters - a scarlet & white male) comes out to her while everyone else is going after their choice... Supposedly, Victoria loses her innocence at this point... (nice way to put it, anyway). The dance is followed by the "Sleep Pile" which can, depending upon the production, get a tad racy... (One US Tour version had Bombalurina and Alonzo getting down and dirty practically in the first row of seats. THe video is extremely tame compared to the above example...)
You open up a literal can of worms trying to answer this. Throughout the play, the characters are seen to sit next to, play with, sometimes even share some intimacies - all dependant upon not only the production, but even the performers playing the parts!
For example, Munkustrap seems drawn to Demeter in the UK verstion of the musical. In the Broadway version, he was seen with Cassandra (Why? The lady playing her was his real life girlfriend!) In the Japanese version, he is often seen with Sillabub (Jemima). And Demeter? In the Broadway version (US Tour), she goes with Alonzo...
Many fans of CATS are more aware of the video than the stage performances. In the video, the debate is still primarily up to the viewer... Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer are often thought of as siblings, but here, I remember one female Forum member saying, "I sure wouldn't do some of those things with my brother!" My vote is that the Tiger "Twins" are mates. Misto and Victoria seem to be headed towards becoming mates, even though she did not dance with him in the Courtship (Brett as Misto is seen going off with Electra! And his choice of Cassandra in the magic act?). Jennyanydots - hot for Bustopher Jones or Skimbleshanks? She gets the flower during BJ's number, but she ends the show near Skimble... Munkustrap is with Demeter, but also with Bombalurina. (Which is why I viewed a possible threesome or triad relationship in my fanfiction.)
Really - There may be favorites, but you will be surprised at the differing combinations that can be voiced by the Forum members - both here and in that "other" Forum... View the video or the stage performance, and make your own judgment...
Quaxo's (Mistoffelees) dance partner at the Jellicle Ball on the video is Electra. It can be interpreted as being mates I suppose, but a lot of the pairings are very odd. For example in the video Tugger is with Jennynaydots and Bombalurina with Pouncival.
