When I was a kid, I discovered Stephen King and so began about a five year period of my life wherein I adored the scary stuff. King, Koontz, VC Andrews. As time has passed I occasionally will dip into the more lurid and King has been a constant ( although less and less scary), but for the most part I don't bother. Eg: I bought Scott Smiths The Ruins, now a movie, but I was less than thrilled and never did finish it.
So whatever possessed me ( lol ) to buy Joe Hills Heart Shaped Box, I'm sure I'll never know but am I ever glad I did.
Its scary as hell, and wonderful, and well written with characters you'll freak over. Being a one time musician myself brought a lot of it closer to home than it might you but the music is incidental. Even managed to summon up a tear at the end. I highly recommend it.
