I recently replaced a flywheel and clutch assembly (reman parts) in a 66 ford galaxie 500 7 liter. the car arrived with a destroyed clutch and flywheel, even the ring gear was chewed up. I could not start the car, the owner just bought it and only had it a few days when it came apart. I had a hard time finding parts, finally locating a flywheel and clutch kit, I installed it with a new starter, everything seamed to work ok, but the engine vibrated and the owner said it did not vibrate like that before, it seams to be rotational, iI sent back the other flywheel as a core, and I ordered another flywheel and installed it in the car, the vibration is a little better but it is still there. I had a friend from a machine shop look it over and a couple of other mechanics have opinions about this car. I was hoping someone here could shed some light on my problem. I have been told that 428 is externally balanced and must have a 428 flywheel, the part store tells me that they have provided me with a 428 flywheel. The machine shop says the engine may not be a 428, and numbers at the bottom right hand side tell them it's a 332? although he told me there books have been wrong before. another mechanic thinks that the part supplier is giving me an incorrect flywheel. how can I tell what engine this is from the out side, and how can I be sure I am getting the right flywheel? the car's vin number does tell me it is an original 7 liter car. the engine does have the goodies on top, ie chrome valve covers aluminum ford intake and holly 4 barrel with cast iron headers. any help would be greatly apriciated

and standard fly wheels are harder to find than auto, you should go back to your provider and get your origional one .
you can try the pull a plug method and with a straw or rod bring pistion to top and insert rod and mark position, roll motor over till bottom and mark rod again 3.75 is 390 3.98 is 428 this is a rough method but may help short of tearing it down. and do try the new forum fordFE.com
more people over there we do come back here and check from time to time

There are many different 428s , standard 428, 428 cj , 428 scj , a automatic or 4 speed for each . You cannot exchange either of them for it throws the ballance out for these motors and causing them to vibrate . The more rpms you add the worse the vib will be . After any fe rebuild I always have the motor ballanced to the flywheel to the short block . These motors can be internally or externally ballanced however they need to be one or the other in order to run smooth . I have ballanced one by chance with no money by taking the dust cover off a automatic by adding weight to the fly wheel , cranking the motor and moving the weight around to slow that vibration . That throws the flywheel ballance to the crankshaft . It is like a fan on a common hose fan new you put up in your house . When it is installed , turnned on it will shake your house to death . k , inside the box it came in is a weight . You place the weight on one of the blades and turn it on , you will find the fan runs smother or worse . Move the weight again to another blade till it runs smoth . Keep moving the weight till the fan moves smoth as silk . That is an easy way I can describe the out of ballance on your car 428 . Do what I said , takes alittle time but in a few you can get it to run smoth and not spend a dime . A poor mans way lol but it works . A 428 flywheel will come factory with the weight already added to the flywheel . In other words you CANNOT put a 390 flywheel on a 428 UNLESS you have the assy ballanced to that flywheel at rebuild . If this is done then that flywheel is married to that motor and always needs to go with it if removed to another car .
