How do you get dispatched if your city had a blackout?

by

I was having a romantic candlit dinner with my hubby, when the thought came to me: What do y'all do if there was a citywide blackout? How do you get y'all dispatches? Just curious.

power failure

by Philip

Most cities, and some fire stations, have diesel generators that power their dispatch centers. They automatically come on when the line power is interrupted. Where I work, only some stations have generators. When a power failure occurs, dispatch ends up calling the stations by phone and someone is tasked with listening to a portable radio until power comes back up. This really stinks at night. Hope this helps!!!

Blackout

by Jimmy

In NYC, the dispatch offices and firehouses have generators run on diesel, that kick in the second the power goes out. These keep the essentials running(CADS,voice alarm, radio) until it comes back up. I believe if it goes out we still have to dispatch via voice alarm(intercom) or by phone. Not sure on that one.

Guess what??

by Jimmy

I just happened to be working the big blackout back in August. Came into work from home and was scheduled for the night tour. We lost the computer a few times, so we dispatched our units via radio and voice alarm(an intercom that runs between us and the firehouses). We also went into a manual operation, tracking our units with plastic chips and writing in info on tickets. Most of it was dispatched by priority, Fires and certain emergencies(Like gas leaks or auto accidents, and a stuck commuter train with 400 plus people on board) first, stuck elevators and utility emergencies after that. We had somewhere in the neighborhood of six or seven working fires from the time the power went out to the time it came back on. And that was just for the Bronx where I dispatch. I think the citywide total was 65 working fires with at least 3 of them going to multiple alarms (two second alarms and one third alarm). We also staffed an additional 33 reserve units(Engines and Ladders with a few reserve chiefs thrown in)

A Late Answer

by Vicki

Don't know if you're still checking answers to your question, but I decided to add mine because it's a little different. Our county dispatch and my station both have backup generators, but we're 100% volunteer so there might not be anyone at the station anyway. We all wear battery powered pagers so we can be reached anywhere, anytime. 'Emergency Service' pagers give out tones and the full dispatch message. And believe me, when the lights go out we start listening very closely to those pagers, because we KNOW we're going to be getting hit out.

Yes...

by Anne

My dress uniform is identical to my male counterparts....dark blue shirt, dark blue dress pants, black shoes. Other departments have jackets too, and some have their women wear dress skirts instead of pants.

I'm re-writing my story STUCK IN THE MIDDLE, because something happened to the original version, but in it, I am a Jr. Paramedic, and I am part of Station 51's elite group, and I have to wear the dress uniform at
Tim Duntley's funeral. Was that William Gray Espy playing Duntley? I don't know played him, but He was kind of cute.

Idea for an E! Fic story.

by Cathy Brown

Now, I'm dr., but as anybody knows, people who lose a lot of blood, go into hypovolemic shock, hypotension.
and who knows what else. If there is no blood for the heart to pump to the rest of the body, then the person dies, am I right?
Now here's the interesting part. We know that sometimes distraught family members wrongly blame the paramedics or doctors for that person's death, when they've done everything they could to save 'em. Well,
what if someone were to intervene on the doctor's or paramedic's behalf, and say, "Look, I know you're hurting, but going after the doctors and paramedics is the wrong move. While you have every right in the world to be angry, and heck, I would be, too. It's time to look at who's really guilty. Someone shot him
(her) several times, and when you lose that much blood, the heart's going to stop beating, and everything shuts down. If you have to be mad at someone, why not be angry at the person who shot him/her. That person cause his(her) death, not the doctors, not the paramedics."
Woulnd't that be an interesting story? Someone ought to write it. That's just a storyline idea.

Dislocated joints

by

How long does it take for dislocated joints to heal?
Do they take as long as broken bones? I'm writing a story where an E! (not the main ones) Character has two dislocated shoulders caused by her parents fighting over her like two children fighting over a doll.

Anaphylactic shock treatment questions

by

I'm writing an E! fic story, and I want to make sure I don't accidentally kill a character off by mistake!

So far I've managed to determine Benadryl, epinephrine and some type of steroid are used in the field in treating this condition, but what would a usual dosage be for a grown man's size? And what type of IV would you use?

Any assistance you could provide would be greatly appreciated. I'd be more than happy to acknowledge your name in the credits when I finally finish the darned thing!

If you prefer, you can contact me via my e-mail address. Thanks.

Off Topic--weird story I'm writing.

by Cathy Brown

I hope this doesn't gross anybody out.
I find abandoned baby girl, a few minutes old, abandoned in the cold, and the mother is lying dead somewhere. I go in call for help, and the cops find the mother dead, and asked me all kings of questions.
Come to find out, the girl had kept the pregnancy secret from her kid-hating,insanely jealous, abusive beau, and has it outside of hospital environment,
and leaves it abandoned by my door, and I raise the baby. I know I'm weird. What do you think of this
hypothetical situation?"

I'm writing a fic too

by Jimmy

I've noticed in some fan fic sites there are segments where the author has the option of teaming up the guys with characters from other tv shows. Examples:CHiPs, Magnum PI, A-Team, Adam-12. Are there any shows from that era 70's-80's you'd like to see?? Maybe something after the boys get promoted?? Let me know. I'm thinking of doing an E!/Code Red crossover.
