The only time you would need an external IR Illuminator is if you are using a cheaper NV setup like a Gen I or Gen II.
If you use a Gen III NV setup you don't need any additional IR illumination because it gathers enough ambient light on its own.
Sure the GEN III setup has a built in IR illuminator (they all do) but I have never had to use the one on mine, because it has always worked great without it.
