he was camped when he was kidnapped, I don't think even Ostman knew exactly where he was. He was, after all, unable to see where he was being carried. If I remember his story correctly, after his escape he just tried to put as much distance as possible between himself and the bigfoot. Only when he was satisfied that he wasn't being followed did he start trying to find his way back to civilization. This, of course, presumes his story wasn't just a "yarn."
