Any recommendations of how we should spend our first night?

We'll be arriving at the Orlando airport around 4pm on October 24th. I figure, we should be in DXL by 6pm. Any recommendation as to how we can spend our first evening in WDW? Viewing the fireworks sounds great. I read that you can book a dinner at the Contemporary and view the fireworks from the observation deck. Does anyone know at what time I should make PS for the dinner in order to be able to catch the fireworks? Also, does it get very crowded?
I'm open to any suggestions.
