Mille v Patek...goofy comparison?

I'm thinking about stepping up to what will be my biggest watch purchase. I want a watch that will be wearable for dress or sport that I won't get tired of, that will hold my interest, and that will hold its value. Strangely, I'm torn between a Mille 05 (ti or wh gold) and a Nautilus Jumbo (probably wh gold). Comments?

impossible comparison

they really are so different. I personally like the RM way better but it is a totally different watch. Maybe wait and check out the 005 Felipe Massa? I saw the Platinum version today and it was pretty cool...i bet the Ti version is awesome.

Hi Peter,

Funny that you mention these two watches... Even though they are very different animals they can be worn at any occasion. The Nautilus and the RM005 are both sport watches that can be worn with a suit, the Titanium RM more so than the Rose Gold.

The thing that I would do is NOT to go with what you think is the sensible choice. By that I mean that watches at these prices are irrational, so in order to make a "rational" choice you need to make another "irrational" decision. Here a minus and a minus make a plus. The point I am trying to make is that what ever you do make sure you don't look back at your decision later.

Good Luck and keep us informed,
D.

Yes and no. I appreciate your dilemma...

and I can not really offer you anything in the way of constructive advice outside of the line: buy the one that speaks to your heart. If you try and reason the decision, you are going to get lost in the circles that inevitably result. I know, I have been there!

Personally, and I mean PERSONALLY, I would take the RM005 WG over the Patek Aquanaut Jumbo WG. I have never liked the styling of the Aquanaut.

Good luck in your choice and let us know how it turns out. Post pictures whatever your choice.

Andrew, one small correction...

Andrew, I am not intending to pick apart your post, but there is one small error. Peter stated that he was thinking about the Nautilus in WG, while you mentioned the Aquanaut. I just wanted to point that out to you in case it affected your viewpoint.

Cheers,

Not really goofy to compare...

As based on your requirements of wanting a single piece to be wearable for dress aka formal/semi formal as well as sport aka rough and tumble events in life as we know it in the present day, both of the pieces for comparison on paper do seem to be about equal in terms of what they present themselves to be. I would think however that the best option would be Mille 005 TI based on the factors below...

I suggest 005 in ti is because IMHO it would show less wear and tear over the years as opposed to the shiny bracelet/case of the Jumbo. While the weight of the WG PP Jumbo on your wrist manifests itself well as luxury on dress/safe/controlled events, it might very quickly outlive its welcome when you are reaching over the luggage bin overhead, grappling with umbrella in the pouring rain etc. Its barely noticeable weight will be most appreciated during these and other moments when we dont want/need/have time to be careful.

Fashion/luxury/utility has been blurred with the every increasing passage and speed of such passage of time. What was once taboo for luxury is now starting to be mainstream/expected in luxury whereas what was once materials used solely for utility has now jumped over to being recognized as part of luxury.

I say go for the RM 005 in ti.

Try posting this question on the Patek forum and see what answers you get there...

I think that the vast majority will give you a different answer to the ones you've got here.

Its a tough choice and I don't envy your decision, but what a great place to be in in the first place..." hmmm lets see , shall I get a Patek or Richard Mille?"

Good luck ( my opinion, go with RM)

James.
