When Jay and I heard we had a snowstorm moving in for tonight and tomorrow, we wanted to get out of the house immediately and do some hiking before being trapped indoors with nothing to do. The Jud Wiebe trail is a local's favorite and starts on the north side of town right off of a neighborhood street.

Cornet Creek

The aspens are nowhere near having leaves yet.

We hiked through snow quite a bit, sinking up to our knees a couple of times.

The place to sit and have a rest and a snack.

A bear paw print. It's hard to tell by this picture, but it was way to big and wide to be a dog's print. I was really wishing I had a Leatherman tool with me.

Telluride and the ski trails.

I'm jealous! Do ya'll carry a gun or anything for protection from bears? I think I'd be a bit nervous about that.

Well, we didn't that day.

May be a good idea when we're alone out in the woods. When the bears are in town at night, they never approach people. Jay came face to face with one in our laundry room last summer. The bear just snorted and turned around and left.

Ooh, what lovely photos.

Can you see which ski slope you skiied down from the last photo?

There's a straight line from the middle of the photo which veers to the left. Is that a ski slope? That looks steep.

Thank you! And yes, that straight line is a ski run! It's named Mine Shaft.

Jay has skied that one and it's pretty crazy. It comes down under lift 8 and sometimes there are exposed rocks that you have to ski around or off of. The run that I skied is the one that looks like a road, brown where they plowed it. The name is Telluride Trail and it's actually a forest service road, so they plowed it as soon as ski season was over so they could use the road to access different places on the gondola when they were doing maintenance while the gondola was closed.

Nice scenery, Lisa

It's a very beautiful setting!
In the early 1980s, a big controversy came up at Ski Telluride proposing to make easier trails cross Black runs. It would allow skiers to bail out onto these trails, so a skier didn't have to take a run at expert effort all the way. Diehard skiers wanted Telluride slopes to continue their reputation as some of the steepest in the US without alteration. The developer majority eventually won, citing that future growth and liability issues made those new trails a necessity.

I can remember in 1982, when Mountain Village didn't exist and only a sizable parking lot to access the west slopes was there before commercial development turned it into a housing playground for a privledged few.
