The House of Commons environment committee wants to ban the use of pesticides used for greener lawns. Some pesticides are just mild detergents that block the breathing of mites while others are more harmful. We cannot seek a chemical solution to every problem, but politicians who bend anyway the wind blows are anti- technology. We do need to study the impact that certain chemicals will have on the environment before use. Salt is a chemical yet we toss in on the ground and the soil is sterilized, we pour it in our rivers and harm the fish. Not to suggest we should not use salt, but use it properly. The environment committee wants a blanket prohibition. An outright ban on lawn chemicals could lead to a similar ban on agricultural chemicals. What affect would this have on farming? Why not stress more research into cultivation methods to reduce the need for chemicals. |
