Robbery suspect shot by would-be victim: armed, off-duty deputy. When a Sumter, South Carolina, man allegedly tried to rob someone in a Columbia Mall restroom, he had no idea how soon he'd be face to face with a police officer.

Keith Atkins, 22, was arrested Saturday afternoon after he tried to rob an off-duty deputy sheriff, police said. According to authorities, the deputy sheriff, Michael Baker of Lexington County, shot his would-be robber during the attempt. Atkins was taken into custody at a hospital where he was recovering from gunshot wounds, Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said.

Baker shot Atkins with a personal weapon, not his service revolver, Lott said.

Richland County deputies will investigate the case and give the results to Richland County prosecutor Barney Giese.

"It looks to be a justifiable shooting," Lott said.

Baker was not injured, and no one else was in the restroom when the shooting occurred.

Baker will be assigned to administrative duty until the investigation is complete, Lexington County Sheriff James Metts said.

Robbery suspect shot by victim

The officer in this case should be completely justified if the suspect had a firearm. If the suspect did not have a firearm, then it is appropriate that the investigation determine if this level of force was warranted under the circumstances. This suspect picked on the wrong person to rob,- looks good on him.

Why did this off-duty cop have to resort to shooting the suspect? Does'nt he have any training at all. OK if the suspect pulled a gun on him, but more likely he just shoot first and asked questions later. Was this in New York? A black man in New York city cannot reach for his wallet or cell phone without getting gunned down by trigger happy cops there.

Why do you have to make it racial?

Why does either man have to be black? And NO it didn't happen in New York City - it happened in Sumter, South Carolina.

So you're upset that a scum bag criminal who isn't man enough to work for a living got shot? If it were me, I'd have emptied the clip and did society a favor. Don't worry. That scum will be back on the street to assualt someone else...maybe a loved one of yours.

If you had actually read the article (or have someone read it to you, judging by your writing that would be a better option) you would have known the shooting not in New York. You would have also saw that it was a "Justifible Shooting" - that means there was sufficient reason for the officer to believe his life was in danger. Anyone with any intelligence would not stand and ask questions against a armed and hostile adversary.

Why are you trying to bring race into this? Your pro-crime stance is bad enough, but please keep your racist views to yourself.

It is time to think before you protest

I am a Gun owner, my guns have never been in a Crime, YET! Unless someone tries to take them away. I love America and our People, But it is time we start doing what is good for America. It is time we start taking responsibility for what is happening to America. We are letting her be taken away from us, by setting back calling for Prisoners rights and such. Listen these People broke the law they violated another Americans right, there is no punishment to strong for then.
Many of us have fought in wars that our Government asked us to participate is, we Crawled through mud, we went without food, except for what we could find in the jungle, and on beaches, most of the time we ate it uncooked. We wear the scars of these wars, both visible on the surface, and concealed within our soles. We did this for America, we have earned the rights we now enjoy. These Prisoners did what they did out of greed, for their own selfish purpose. Now you tell me why they are treated better than we were, and are? why do they get all the relief of early release to commit more crimes while we loose more and more of our liberties? This is my land I paid for it, these are my Guns I paid for them, this is my house I paid for it, and in doing so I paid for your land, guns and home, but it is up to you to protect them. We have to keep a close watch on our Government, they no longer want what is best for America, they just want the power so they can break the laws of our Constitution and give this country away for their own personal gain.

robbery suspect/guns, guns

December 5 2000, 11:19 AM

Americans, all they talk about is guns. I don't agree we need to ban ALL guns;- but there is no need to have a gun for every citizen, come on. Every person, man, woman and child is not a hunter or gun collector. No wonder there are so many gun related violent acts in the U.S., they still think they are in the cowboy days. Maybe growing up Americans associated guns with toys and they just cannot put away those toys. What need is there for everyone to be armed to the teeth? You need to do more than keep all the guns to prevent being absorbed by the new world order.

It's sad...

...sad that all those law abiding Americans won't give up their guns and let the NWO take over like Nazis did with the Jews.

Nobrains - maybe you should pay attention.

Americans don't advocate guns for every citizen. Americans (real ones) advocate guns for law abiding citizens who wish to have them. Who says anything about being armed to the teeth?

You want to talk about gun violence? Lets talk about South Africa. Let's talk about Northern Ireland. Hmmmmm...

There is violence in American because people like you make there way here (unfortunatly) and then they take away morals- by supporting a one world govenment (communist) which bans freedom of religion among other things. Then they support criminals (like you do) and attack law abiding citizens who dare to defend themselves. (Like you do).

We have an average of 250,000 on deer hunting opening in my home state. All with high powered rifles, shotguns, and handguns. No murders.
Care to explain that?

You see, guns don't cause violence. Lack of morals and lack of respect does. You might not be aware, but there was violence in the world before guns were invented - it's true! (am I going too fast for you?) CRIMINALS cause violence. Criminals that have a society of unarmed victims awaiting cause more violence. Criminals with unarmed victims and are still supported in society by people like you cause even more violence.

what you say - no guns

What rock did you crawl out from under. Where have you been? Why should people become victims when they could defend themselves given the means? Why should guns be banned, does'nt anyone learn from history?I think it has been stated on this message board before that what happened in Germany, Russia and so many other countries happened after guns were taken away to make it safe for all. Why don't you go back from where you came instead of trying to bring your commie crap here. Giving up all guns is giving up all freedom. It is not just about guns, it is about population control.
