Our Lady of the Rockies began from one mans spiritual promise. His wife was very ill, and in his prayers, he vowed that if she got well he would build a statue in honor of Mary and place it on the mountain. His vision was to build a statue a few feet high, and when his wife recovered he set out to fulfill his promise. In discussing this project with his friends and co-workers, the vision expanded and culminated six years later in the erection of Our Lady of the Rockies. The faith and determination of the initial core group was strong. This project was completed with intensive work from countless volunteers and unlimited generosity from local individuals and businesses.
Our Lady of the Rockies stands atop the Continental Divide overlooking Butte Montana. Weather permitting, tours are taken to the statue site from the end of May through September and into October. As the eight mile long road up the mountain is a private road shared by various groups, public access is not possible. To help prevent commercialization of Our Lady of the Rockies, there is no gift shop or concession stand on the mountain site itself.
Our Lady of the Rockies is not church-sponsored and is non-denominational.. Our Mission Statement explains the purpose of the Our Lady of the Rockies Foundation.
Our Lady of the Rockies Foundation Mission Statement is To Recognize the Dignity of Motherhood and the sacrificial Love a Mother has for her child, without regard to Nationality or Belief, in a manner that honors All Women and lifts the human spirit in love, peace & joy, and to maintain the Statue and support facilities in such a way that future generations will treasure Our Lady of the Rockies for what it represents.
We are very proud of Our Lady of the Rockies. The Foundation celebrated the 12th Anniversary of the erection of the statue in December of 1997. We are entering an exciting time for OLR. A chapel/observatory is being built on the mountain site. Work should be completed this summer. A Womens Memorial Wall honoring all women and mothers will be placed on the outer basement walls of this chapel. The name of any woman who died any place or any time can be submitted to be added to this Wall. Currently there are over 6,000 names submitted.
