Raging Rivers A Hazard for Pets and People Says The Humane Society of Canada (HSC)
VANCOUVER, April 15 /CNW/ - "Spring rains, combined with melting snow,
are turning creeks and rivers into raging torrents of water" warns Al Hickey,
Western Regional Director of The Humane Society of Canada (HSC). "Dogs, cats
and other pets must be kept away from these dangerous water ways" he explains.
"Ice on ponds and lakes must also be avoided since pets can easily break
through and drown," according to HSC Executive Director Michael O'Sullivan,
who owns three dogs and two cats.
Dogs often swim or jump into water at familiar locations. We have to
protect our canine friends as they may not be aware that the water
temperatures are near freezing and they might not realize that the water is
deeper and faster at this time of year placing them at risk.
For more than 17 years, Al Hickey was the Chief Executive of the BC SPCA.
Over the past 30 years Michael O'Sullivan has worked here in Canada and in
over 85 countries helping, people, animals and nature.
