"At the heart of this problem of trade agreements is a difference in
philosophy. Unfortunately the purpose of NAFTA and FTAA is to enhance
and protect corporate interests. The purposes governments should be
pursuing are the health, safety and prosperity of their people. The
two are not synonymous. An agricultural base is the foundation of all
countries. Nations should protect their workers, their land and their
natural resources from exploitation and plunder by transnational
corporations. Unless this treaty is negotiated openly and debated
publicly, this will not happen. The purpose of fast-track authority is
precisely to cut off debate and to present the Congress with a fait
accompli. Come to think of it, Congress should not give the president
fast-track authority period. They're not going to negotiate this thing
in the open. It is Congress, not the president, which has the
constitutional authority to set trade policy. Many people were lied to
during the selling of NAFTA.... They have to lie because, if they told
the truth, it wouldn't get ratified. ...It is not a case of free trade
or protectionism. It's really a case of democracy or rule by an
international corporate oligarchy." --Charley Reese
How about the McCain-Feingold campaign finance bills as the first major legislative attempt to regulate political speech on the internet. They are on the legislative fast track. Is this not an attempt or attack on the First Amendment. John McCain came out as an enemy of free speech in 1999 when he said, "If I could think of a way constitutionally, I would ban negative ads." Regulations under this bill would require disclosure of names and political finances of political activists. By this requirement a measure of political control by intimidation is achieved. Disclosure is control. Just as we know that the registration of all firearms is the first step on the road to confiscation, disclosure is the first step to abolition of any open political discussion. Disclosure as a first step to stifle debate for government and disclosure like gun control is a first step to abolition.
Multinational corporate rule is what the end result will be and not the best interests of the people. The people have no say and are to be led in the dark to avoid waves while closed door meetings decide all.
